Hey all,

Well, I finally got around to finishing my Liberty Training Rifle (http://appleseedproject.blogspot.com/2008/02/liberty-training-rifle.html) and signing up for my first Appleseed - I'll be at the one in Davilla, TX, The 19-20 of this month.

Has anyone else here been to that particular Appleseed? Will the LTR be sufficient or do I need to bring a larger centerfire rifle as well? Any tips, etc. would be greatly appreciated. Needless to say I'm pretty excited about the whole thing.

Your LTR will be fine. If you have a centerfire rifle bring it as well, Davilla has a KD range with steel out to 700 yards.

I'm scheduled to go to my first Appleseed with my daughter June 26/7 in Myakka, FL, and really looking forward to it. Good luck!

As a poor former college student about to become a poor married man, all I've got in semi-automatic center fire is a slightly modified Yugo SKS. It shoots about 4 MOA. I have aspirations of an M1 Garand. Maybe one of these days.

First Appleseed...

Best wishes to both Scottish Claymore and Phil Post @ their first Appleseed events!

Do read and heed the "what to bring" list on the Appleseed website--they know whereof they speak, and they aren't kidding when they say that Appleseed events proceed regardless of the weather.

One equipment suggestion I'd make is to BRING GOOD ELBOW PADS--the list mentions that but does not stress it.

At my first Appleseed, on the second day, I rigged a set of skateboard elbow pads, with more soft padding beneath, all inside my Rifleman coat, which has elbow pads of its own! Still ended up w/bleeding elbows--you spend a lot of time in the prone position.

That minor point aside, an Appleseed is a GREAT way to spend a weekend, shooting A LOT, learning A LOT, and hobnobbing with others of like mind. You'll be a better shooter for it, and have a stronger grounding in what makes this country great.

I already shoot highpower service rifle but for the fun and excuse of dragging out my 10/22 and modifying the silly thing, I just ordered the sights and enrolled in an Appleseed. If they're doing long range too I guess I should bring something a little bigger as well...

LOL

I'll second the strong suggestion for elbow pads. I'd also suggest a padded shooting mat and more padding never hurts. Ours was on concrete and I was infinitely grateful for taking a carpet remnant to go under my shooting mat.

Definitely elbow pads. I got a pair from Wal-Mart for $12. I was shooting on a piece of carpet with a GI bedroll pad on top of that and was glad I had the elbow pads.
Good luck.

We will need...

Scottish Claymore and Phil Post--forgot to say that here @ THR, we will much appreciate an after-action report when you return from yr respective Appleseed events!

Thanks in advance! :)

Just shot Rifleman at my first Appleseed event this past weekend. Had a blast! The instructors were wonderful and ran a great course. My elbow were bothering me after the first day, so I echo the recommendations about elbow pads and/ora shooting jacket. Although I was shooting off a mat, the inside of my trigger knee was also bothering me after being prone for so long in the dirt and rocks. I'm planning on bringing a knee pad to the next Appleseed as well.

As far as rifle selection, bring 'em both. I chose to shoot .22 lr exclusively and am glad I did. We shot just under 500 rounds over the two day course. Thinking of buying that much 7.62 gives me the heebie-jeebies. My Ruger 10/22 ran flawlessly with CCI Mini-Mags and I couldn't be happier with her performance. The only thing that I added was the sling and Tech Sights. I had my M1A in the car in case I wanted to make some noise or if the LTR went down, but didn't end up needing it.

Good luck and have fun, you'll be grinning ear to ear by the time it's all done.

Fly'nBuff - glad to hear you had a good time, really makes me look forward to going. I've taken everyones advice and got some elbowpads, which came in a set w/kneepads, so I'm covered with those as well (my daughter will just use her skateboard pads). I also just got 500 rounds of Brown Bear, so I'm set if I want to go 7.62. The only thing is my daughter has 2 mags for her 10 22, but I only have 1 mag for my Savage 64; I'll try and get another just cause I should have more than 1, but I have 6 mags for my AK, so if multiple mags make a big difference.....
Anyhow, thanks all for the advice and feedback.

Hmm, I'd need more brass and bullets if I need that much ammo! I guess I can start slow, and try like heck to catch the next one that comes through. I know what to get at WalMart while waiting,,,pads...
