I bought 1000rds of Wolf .223 62gr polymer coated steel cases from Sportsman's Guide. I tried them out in my Armalite a few days ago and the results were disappointing to say the least. A couple of days ago I received an email from SG thanking me for my recent order and soliciting any feedback. I informed them about the performance of the Wolf in my AR15.

Today I received an offer for an RA and refund on unused ammo. I am still trying to decide whether or not I want to take them up on their offer but at this point I am inclined to.

On a related note, I sent an email to CPProducts about how their magazines performed with this ammunition and received an email from the owner asking me to return the magazines for examination and replacement.

Overall, I have to say that I am more than satisfied with SG's customer service as well as with CPProducts.
 
What exactly were the issues you encountered? Were they ammo or mag related, or both? Is it possible it could have been only one or the other?

I fired seven rounds total of this ammo. The first three functioned fine. Then two different failure to feeds from two different magazines with which I have had no previous problems with hand loads or other commercial ammo. The magazines would bind whether or not short loaded. I can't say the ammo is the fault but the coincidence is intriguing to say the least. The last shot resulted an a stuck case. This is in an Armalite that has never had any issues, was clean to start the session, had 7 rounds fired over the course of 10 or more minutes, has a chrome chamber/barrel and is chambered for the 5.56 not .223.

Does your AR have a chrome-lined barrel? I'm asking because of a thread we have going in Rifle Country oddly related to this subject.

Is it SG or Wolf ? Wolf offers the satisfaction or money back guarantee. I really don't think SG would take ammo back from any other manufacturer. As a matter of fact, I don't think anybody does. Just wondering.
 
I bought several thousand rounds of the .223 Wolf polymer from SG. My M16 eats it up at an alarming rate! No problems what so ever like you describe though 308Win.

Accuracy wise it is pretty good. And I can run it full auto to the point where the handguards get to hot to touch. I love the stuff!

Good luck with your problem. I hope you find a solution.

BTW, I agree on SG's customer service. I have had nothing buy good luck with them.
 
Larry at CProducts is good people too. They had a few probs with a group buy at arfcom, but even those guys have given him a second chance. With AR-15 mags, there are so many choices, a company must offer a good product and awesome service, lest they die.
 
To follow up on the Wolf .223 62gr. I removed the stuck case last nite. Looked at the inside of the extraction rim and the rim was gouged (for lack of a better word) where the extractor engaged it. It looked like the steel was soft enough that the extractor removed metal with edges as sharply defined as if done by a machine tool. Also, the rim in this area looks thinner and the grove doen't appear as deep so the extractor may not have been getting a good solid purchase. So, could be a convergance of a lot of different issues that resulted in the failure to extract. I am returning tomorrow for exchange for the Bosnian stuff if it is still available.

I didn't think you were supposed to use the steel cases in the Armalite's. It was my understanding that doing so, would cause you to have some extraction problems and some accelerated internal wear, if not damage, to your gun.

I know that the SKS, AK's, Tokarev's, Glocks can use the steel case, as there are in essence "made" to use that kind of ammo, but on the US manufactured .223 and 7.62's you should use the brass, as they do not like the steel cased ammo. Anyway, I wouldn't put cheap wolf fodder through a gun I paid $800 - $1,600 for.

CProducts is an actual manufacturer. They will sell to folks right at the factory (BTDT), and they tell you right then and there that if you have any problems, just stop back and they'll straighten everything out. Larry is very good about keeping customers in the know about new products, changeing old flawed patterns in for updated patterns, and sometimes, he'll even act on customer advice. He's pretty active on ARFCOM.

Sportsmans Guide is a good company as well, but they have flawed me more than CProducts- short shipping, not shipping, saying they have merchandise they don't have, impropper addressing:fire::fire:, and shipping restrictions that are based on flawed information and seem to change every couple seconds
 
As long as we are updating just had another favorable experience. They had a scabbard and bayonet repro combo, came to about $115. Well, my mistake it's the wrong bayonet. Called them up, told them, no problem, sent it back to them and refunded my card with no issues.
 
they won't sell magazine springs or stripper clips to CA, but will sell ammo. GO figure.

But I have spent over 3k with them in the last few years and they have been excellent. But my M1 Carbine feels like they discriminate her still . :(

SG was very good to me on customer service; in my one incident with them, I ordered two Chilean Mausers and got one Chilean Mauser and one busted cardboard box containing a pile of toothpicks, which they immediately replaced.
They seem to me to be in the business of selling the shoddiest fourteenth hand merchandise anywhere, and it's obvious from the catalog pictures, but the customer service associated with it has been very good in my experience.

I think your problem is using the steel cased ammo in the Armalite. I think they need brass. See my original post.

I do not know how anyone here can hold Sportsmansguide accountable for Wolf ammo. Also, I am sure that they will work with him WHEN / IF he decides to return the ammo.

In future, in your $1,200+ rifles use Winchester brand. They sell in bulk.
 
I have an Armalite with 20" barrel. It eats Wolf steel case ammo just fine. I have never had an issue using it. I have been through 800 to 1000 rounds. It is very dirty, but cleaning solves that. It can shoot a little different than the nice Federal ammo, but it is good for practice.

Now I have had trouble with the Wolf M193 brass case stuff. That stuff acted like it was underloaded and wouldn't cycle the action reliably. You could see that the first few cases would barely roll off the table instead of flying away like other ammo. Then it would fail to pick up the next round. I guess it could be possilbe that the ammo you have is under loaded.

How many rounds total have you fired in the rifle? (all ammo)

Try using the stock 10 round mag the rifle came with. Some of the first cheap mags I tried to use didn't work well, but that original 10 rounder always did.
 
I have the RA from SG and I intend to return the Wolf for the Bosnian brass cased 62gr.

As for the Armalite and steel cased ammo; I have not heard that Armalite discourages shooting it. In any case, I believe from observation that the Wolf case that would not extract was not in spec with respect to rim thickness and extractor groove depth.

As for using the 10rd Armalite factory magazines, mine came with two thirty round factory magazines. Frankly, I don't care for the thirty rounds magazines as they are too long and always in the way but that is my preference.
