Dear Sportsman's Guide:

I've had .380 ammo on backorder since April. I understand supplies were low, and so I also ordered from Cabella's and Natchez. I received my order from Natchez two months ago, and my order from Cabella's three weeks ago.
All for the exact same product I ordered from you.
Yesterday, you advised me that the ammo was backordered until March of 2010 now. Perhaps, you don't want to fulfill your promise at the price I agreed to? ($15/50).
Rest assured, I can wait forever. You haven't charged my card (by law) and I will keep my order active.
Odd how Cabella's and Natchez got theirs from Sellier & Bellot months ago, but you were left out.

I guess if one is to order ammo, you may not be the place.

SG probably had more people on their waiting list, and you were likely pretty far down on it.

No way of knowing this for sure, but my guess would be that the OP is right. They probably don't want to fulfill his order at the price he ordered it at and are hoping he and other customers that ordered at that price just give up and cancel their order.

Gunsandmore, I suspect you're right. However, is there anything in your state law that prevents them from canceling the order?

They where great through the shortages, I was getting 1000rd cases of 7.62x39 for $197-210 all through the shortages b/c of the 30 or so backorders I had from them. They are really just backordered. They have been adjusting prices on many orderes lately, you can complain and the may adjust. They were making some people return ammo. None of mine worked out that way.

State? I think federal. Every month they send me an E-Mail with a new date. Now, it jumped to March 2010. I always agree.
I can see why maybe they do not want to sell you ammo at a loss. Sorta not a smart way to do business.
They set the price, I agreed to it. I also joined their "Buyer's Club" for a year because their ammo selection and price was good.
If they want to get me off their books, send me the ammo, and I'll be done.

I don't think they could offer it online for sale without filling my order, but who knows.

I've worked in the retail field for over 50 years on and off, and sorry I'd just let you set. Never sold anything at a loss unless I wanted to get rid of it, then usually just threw it away and wrote it off.

This is why I say the statement "the customer is always right, never worked in retail".

The same thing happened to me with sportsman's guide. I placed an order for ammo which they said was on backorder. They kept pushing the date back for quite some time before I finally cancelled my order. I probably should have done what you are doing.

i am in the same boat there guns and more... got the email this morning and i too clicked to keep my order... i didnt have any 380 on hand when i ordered, but i do now... i will keep it there until they fill it

Wait...what?...Cabelas has 380 online?
Probably not now. They had Sellier & Belliot listed as backordered for $17/50. So I signed up for 500 rounds. One day it appeared at my door.
Same deal with Natchez.
Both came through.

Do they have it listed at a higher price now? If they do have sombody order a box and see if they get it. Then you will know if they truely have any or not.
Just a thought.

The great thing about a product being in demand is that it does not matter who they sell it to. Everyone wants it so it will get sold whether you cancel your order or not.

May effect future sales from you in the future though. Gotta live in the present sometimes though.

Do they have it listed at a higher price now?
No. And I watch. So maybe they are being stiffed by S&B since they were less expensive.
Maybe the manufacturer filled orders to Natchez and Cabella's first.
I'm not bashing Sportsman's Guide, (yet) I'm just laying it out. They must be the last to be supplied.
My next ammo order will be Natchez.

Yep, but in the down economy, a store would be wise to keep any customer they have.

Dealing with sportsman's guide is like playing 3-card monte in an alley. You might come out ahead. You'll probably get skinned.

Their habitual tactics of taking orders for a low price, then backordering indefinitely while selling the same thing for a higher price is common. I will never deal with them again.

They aren't the company they used to be. I've seen the change in pricing and availability on a lot of stuff, Big Lots could do better and even they have changed.

The discount and surplus merchandisers know their market has moved to a new generation that doesn't know how to shop a price or research a product. They're coasting on their old reputation. For the best example, Cheaper Than Dirt. Who isn't, more like You Newbs Really Don't Recognize Retail When You See It, Do You?

I'm old enough to remember when dirt was new, HK mags cost $20 each, and most of those catalog retailers really had bargains. No longer.

funny that you mention cheaper than dirt, tirdod. i ordered a springfield amrory factory mag from them and they sent me a promag! i called to complain and they said keep it, they'll send me out the right one--gues what? they sent me the same promag again!

i ended up getting a full refund. that was the first time dealing with them, and i don't see doing business with CTD ever again.

I've always liked the Guide,.......

........and until the gun and ammo buying craze hit, have always been satisfied with them. When the craze was at its thickest, their prices were still cheaper than most( especially Not Cheaper Than Dirt, who was charging WAY higher prices!). I waited for a sardine can of 7.62 for four months. Still had some on hand, so I stuck it out till they delivered. Ammo availability is bouncing back, but VERY slowly.

I saw .380 in walmart last week.
Holy Moly! In Florida too?

That's why I'm not cancelling my order with S/G.
I have a good stock, and it's starting to show up on the shelves.

When I bought my Sig P238, I paid $30/50 at the LGS so I could try it out.
The same day, Dirtier Than Cheap was selling it for $39/50 + shipping.

No more, and gun owners have a long memory.

Same thing here with me an the .380 S&B but a $12.89/50. I had some .223 on b/o too but let it go b/c AIM had it just as cheap. I would be willing to let the .380 go if they refund me the cost of signing up for the "Buyers Club", but I have no reason to not stick it out. If I would have read about their b/o tactics before ordering 8 months ago I would not have ordered. Fool me once, shame on me............
