I sent off my new Springfield loaded 1911 last week to Springfield due an out of spec slide stop that was causing occasional premature lock back with hollow points. It also had one fall to half cock when pulling the trigger. The gun was new and only had about 200 round through it when I sent it back.

Although I was less than happy about having to send back a new gun, I was aware that 1911's sometimes need a little help. They also paid for shipping both ways, and were very helpfull in the whole process, so overall I was a happy panda.

Well I just heard back from springfield, and they have repaired my gun, replacing the slide stop as well as looking over the gun for any other out of spec/ problamatic parts. The did find a problem (they didn't specify) with the ILS system, which they said they repaired. Presumably this is what caused the drop to half cock.

While it is there I am also having it sent to the custom shop to replace the thumb safety with a single sided version, and a front night sight with black rear. They said it would be back to me in about 2 weeks.

I am still a happy panda, as they have been extremely professional, as well as helpfull and pleasant throughout the whole process.

I must say however, that I will be replacing the ILS mainspring housing with standard parts, once I get my gun back. If it failed once, it could again, and that could get me killed.:(

SO... I have been looking at mainspring housings, and I was wondering if any one had any experience with the ed brown chainlink or snakeskin housings? they look really nice but I'm not sure they would provide the same grip as a standard checkered unit.

I too have had great experinces with Springfield customer service. Sig has really good customer service as well as Henry. Mossberg has left me disappointed.

I have also heard good things about sig.

Now I just need to find a Mainspring housing and i'll be all set.

Of the textures, checkered, serrated, Chainlink or Snakeskin, I've found the Chainlink the most rugged and least abrasive...won't dent or abrade like checkering...and unidirectional...I find Snakeskin more about appearance than function...which increases traction as you tighten your hand.

My favorite textures are Conamyds and Golfball...but they are usually only a custom option

So the Chainlink is the least abrasive, but does it give enough grip compared to checkered? Sorry about all the questions, but I've never held one in person to be able to compare.

thanks!

It works opposite of the way checkering works. Checkering presses the points into your flesh, newer textures press require that you press your flesh into the depressions.

I personally like it better as philosophically it reflects my style of shooting...letting the platform work for you
