I have had a GI model full size for a few months now. It feeds hardball every time without a hitch. I recently took my chl class and am now waiting for my permit. I debated getting a new pistol strictly for carry, such as a colt commander, but I would really like to carry my GI as I can shoot it very well, and it's already paid for!

The problem comes when loading JHP. If I use the slide stop release it will load the hollow points fine. If I try to slingshot the slide the bullet nose hangs on the ramp, and looks almost like it was jammed straight into the ramp instead of sliding up. I have to pull the slide back and release it several times before it finally chambers the round.

If I only have three rounds in the mag, then I can slingshot load it without a problem, it goes right in. But it won't do this with a full magazine. So is the problem most likely a weak magazine spring?

Feed

Lemme take a guess...

Even when it feeds and goes to battery from the slidestop, you've noticed a
pronounced "Ka-Chunk" sound/feel.

Most nose-dive failures to feed are directly attributable to the magazine...and most of the time, it's the spring. Some few others have feed ramp geometry issues...Ramp generally being too steep.

The second most common cause is extractor geometry or the breech face guide rail dimension being too narrow.

Remove the extractor and see if the problem improves or goes away. If it does...there's your bug. If not...look elsewhere. Just for chuckles, beg, borrow, or...appropriate...a factory Colt OEM 7-round magazine and see if that cures it.

Careful you don't push the bullet back in the case. 45 is pretty forgiving, but ....

Rest assured I am very careful to make sure the pressure doesn't get too high from re-chambering. I took the extractor out, it didn't make a difference. I noticed that it will chamber the hollow points after removing one round from the mag. I am now procuring a colt mag to see if that's the culprit. Thanks for all your help so far.
