I plan on putting a flat MSH on my Springfield Loaded Commander to replace the arched one. Has anyone done this with this model without any filing required? I dont need to know how to do it, but Im hoping for an actual drop-in part, if that really exists. Ive heard some fit without filing and some dont.

If this question is pointless because all frames have different specs then please tell me. Also, if I find one that fits is it possible to be loose as well? Im afraid either may be the case. Any help would be great.

Tex: I can not say ya or nay on your Springfield semiauto, but I can relate my experience with my two Gold Cups. I have both a blued Series 70 and a stainless steel Series 80 Colt pistol. I replaced both flat MSH's with arched MSH's since I much preferred arched. Both were drop ins without any fitting. The main spring and cap were easy to changeover also, simply by drifting out a small pin and switching parts. Just check out a schmatic before disassembling your pistol. Flat housings are available from Brownells or MidwayUSA. :)

Generally the only ones that might require any fitting at all will be a MSH with a magwell.

I don't think a general statement can be made that a given MSH will fit a given pistol without any "fitting". I swapped out the MSH in a SA with a Wilson aftermarket, and while it was "close" a little fitting was required. The fitting was accomplished with a stone, not a file, so not much material had to be removed.

If you haven't noticed already, the Springfield Owners Manual, downloadable from their website, dedicates 5 pages to removal and replacement of the MSH.

Thanks for the info. My whole reasoning for swaping the msh was the bottom right corner of the grip dug into my hand. I think it has something to do with the arched msh and how it changes my grip on the gun because my other 1911s with flat msh dont do this. Anyway I took some 120 grit to the corner of the grip and problem solved in about 1 minute. I still prefer the flat msh and may change it someday but its no longer bugging me so much. Thanks again for the suggestions.
