Does anyone know if the Sprgfld M1A accepts steel case ammo? I will be purchasing a M1A very soon and wish to stock on ammo, possibly Silver Bear if the weapon does OK with it. I realize steel is not as healthy as brass but we all eat the things that are not good for us. Thanks in advance for the input.

I have the M1A SOCOM II, and it scarfs down and craps out steel case Silver Bear without a hiccup. Honestly, I don't see the point in owning a battle rifle that cannot digest any in-spec ammo you feed it. Not that it's anywhere in the immediate future, but in a SHTF scenario, I want a rifle that will take what I feed it and bark back with "Thank you sir, may I have another?!", haha.

Working with is one thing, working well is another.... if you can afford an M1A, may I suggest you look at some nice western surplus options like Radway Green and DAG? Not quite as cheap as the cheapest Russian stuff, but military spec/military production, quality stuff, not that expensive (around 45 cents/rd) and incidentally a brass case.

See AIM Surplus for some options.

Thanks, Z and Chop. I am just building my sons inheritence arsenal. Hope you both celebrated the 234th anniversary of the first American Revolution. God Bless America!

It WILL eat it and most likely won't give you too many problems... but I WOULDN'T run it through mine unless there were no other choice. Leave the steel stuff for the AKs and Minis, IMO. Quality brass/berdan surplus is about 2 or 3 cents more a shot from what I've been able to find.

Get a spare USGI extractor or two. ;)

1KPerDay, .36 and .43, respectively, is closest steel vs. brass comparison I can find. Those results are courtesy of ammoengine.com, which I've found to be darn reliable. 7 cents adds up fast. Please let me know if you can find some brass case in the 2 cent ballpark of cheaperthandirt.com's Brown and Silver Bear. I agree entirely about the extractor, though. Get a whole other bolt if you can spring for it.

Oh, and yeah, GOD BLESS THIS GREAT NATION! (But be eternally vigilant against the wolves of tyranny)

M1A Steel Case Ammo

I took a look at AIM Surplus offerings. The German ammo was very impressive. I do like the nickel coated projectile. Thanks for that one. Added that site to my favorites. I too am a CTD customer. Thanks again for all the input. I am currently toying with a 1927A1 Thompson from Kahr. I have bought enough spare parts to completly rebuild it. Will probably do the same for the M1A. My investment advice: Buy more ammo. Pull High.

Yes, the M1A will handle steel cases like Silver Bear ok. But, with that said I wont be buying any more.

The cost difference is not that great and I got tired of not being able to switch from steel to brass cases without having to scrub my chamber first.

1K, thanks for the ammo site reference! Have you dealt with these guys? How's shipping costs? Thanks.

No, as soon as you run steel-case in that M1A, you will break your firing pin and extractor. :p
