I had something happen to me the other day at the range. My Springfield P9 Ultra in 40SW started dropping mags when fired. Anyone experience anything like this before? I ordered a new Mag retainer spring from EAA to try and switch out, but am not convinced that this is the problem. Perhaps my mags are just worn out, but I don't think that is it either, as I wouldn't expect it to start happening with both mags at the same time.

Thanks,
Ed

BTW, I understand that this is pretty much the same firearm as the CZ75 and the EAA Witness. Springfield sent me to EAA for parts...

Could be one of a few things, all easy to fix.

1. You could be inadvertently depressing the release while firing. Try changing your grip or have someone else shoot it and see if the same thing happens.

2. Magazine release spring is weak/worn/broken.

3. Magazine release catch that engages the magazine is deformed/broken.

4. Magazines are worn/broken. This is pretty unlikely... and chances are you'd see something not right or worn, especially if the mags are finished in blue or black.

I'd start with 1 and 2.

Question: Did Springfield really send you to EAA? That doesn't make any sense, I would expect them to remedy any issues with their pistols regardless of manufacturer. For example, most of their 1911 frames are made by a Brazilian company ... I wouldn't expect to have to deal with them over a frame problem. Likewise, I don't think Springfield makes the XD, but I'm pretty sure they support them. I've heard a ton of bad things about EAA's support, and would have considered a Springfield labeled-Witness as a way to get a Witness without having to ever deal with EAA directly.

Thanks, I didn't think about the grip while shooting. I've looked at the Mag. Catch, and I think it's good, but the spring in there does give me concern. If the spring doesn't fix it, I guess I can swap the Mag. release to the other side and see if that takes care of it....that would also troubleshoot a Magazine issue as well.

Yes, they really sent me to EAA for parts. Springfield no longer supports their P9, nor do they carry any parts for them. They recommend going to Wolff for basic springs, and going to EAA for any other parts. BTW...this gun has a Mfg. Date of 1994. So it's basically 15 yrs. old and Springfield no longer supports it....something to keep in mind.

What really burns me is that I traded a very nice Browning Hi Power in 40 for this Springfield...and the Springfield has done nothing but give me trouble....
