Springfield TRP model

I have an opportunity to get one of these, and it looks like a nice pistol but I have never been to fond of Springfields in the past. I have owned a couple of their 1911s, a Loaded, and a Mil Spec, and neither were 100 percent reliable.

How is the TRP in comparison? Is it a better made pistol? How is it different from a loaded model?

as I recall, the TRP is sort of a tweaked assemblyline model, sort of a pseudo custom shop gun, as opposed to the full custom shop models.

I've had numerous Springfield's, and they were all flawless, I'm somewhat surprised to hear of your problems before--that's too bad. These were new guns, not used ones that someone else may have tampered with or something? Lots of people try t "fix" a gun or make it better or replace some part and mess it up, then just trade it in for some other poor slob to get it.

That having been said, I have never been able to pull the trigger on a springer more expensive than the Loaded, since my Loaded will shoot one ragged hole and is totally reliable, and I can't see how I'd do better than that with one of their more expensive models. If you've got the scratch though, I say go for it.

I don't know about anyone else, but my TRP has been very reliable except with some of my handloads and 8 rounds mag but once I adjust the OAL everything seen fine. No problem with factory ball or HP loads what so ever. Accurate, reliable, very well put together, and no problem with the MIM parts either.

I have over 5k rounds through mine without a single malfunction... I am also using Wilson 47D magazines in it.

There are two types of Springfield 1911's, ones completely built and assembled in Brazil and those that are built here in the U.S. from Brazilian made parts. The higher end Springfields are built here in the US on Brazilian made parts and typically display superior craftsmanship. You can tell the two apart by a quick visual inspection. The US finished guns have more crisp lettering and markings whereas the Brazilian guns have inferior markings (uneven depth, not always straight).

The TRP is finished here in the US. All the critical parts are hand fitted by the guys in the Custom Gun Shop. They are among the best 1911 pistolsmiths in the world by the way. You can tell the TRP is touched by them because the slide, barrel and extractor will have hand etched serial numbers on them which tells you those parts were fitted by a smith. The fit, finish and general craftsmanship is second to none. I own Ed Browns and love them, but I enjoy shooting my TRP more... goofy, I know... but it's THAT good.

I think Springfield makes great guns, I have an Imbel GI model and a US Loaded model and both are excellent firearms, and have been 100% for me.
And if its not Springfield has a lifetime warranty.

In that TRP picture above you can see the quality of the fitting on the beaver tail, My loaded is tight everywhere but its missing the smooth curve of that TRP.

I like the TRP & from the few times I have shot them, good shooters to boot. If I were in the market to add another 1911 to my collection, it would be on the list of candidates.

In that pic I posted of the rear end of the TRP you can see the slide to frame fit, also note the fit of the extractor. It's flawless.

Springfield makes great products. Here is a GI that I had customized. Look at the slide to frame, extractor and beavertail on this one, that started out as a $399 pistol.

Thanks sturm, it has been a fun project. It's still not quite perfect, as it is having some problems returning to battery. Still a little too tight, but I'm working with the Custom Shop on it. But it shoots like a dream.

Well here is my SS loaded, I have done a few things to it, Greider trigger, EGW bushing, VZ grips, checkered the MSH and the mag button, the Molly Teflon finish, and softened all of the corners I thought were to sharp.
I have had a few people mistake it for a TRP already.
The skateboard tape gives it away though.
