I love this gun. From what I've seen it's one of a relatively small number of high-cap 45 pistols, along with the G21, your odd hi-cap 1911 variant, Fn Herstal FNP and select others. And even some of those are more concealable than this gun, so it's definitely not a CCW pistol. What's the intended purpose of this 5 inch tactical model? Do any organized outfits employ this weapon? From what I understand most LE is strictly .40 cal (Beretta, Glock 22) and military mostly Beretta M9 with the odd USP. What is the general consensus on this type of weapon and this weapon in particular?

I have experience with the 9mm brother, but not the .45 , except the dozen or so of my friends that SWEAR by it - they say it's the best choice between the glock, FN, or 1911 , and it isn't because of the price as they could buy whatever they choose.....just keeps on a'shooting and comfortably so, from what they say.
I personally prefer 1911 for anything, but love my XD-9 as well

It was a bang for the buck when it came out and I immediatly snagged one. Mine has a 4" barrel. Not sure if any outfits use it, but the gun was modified from the Croatian military sidearm, thus it was proven in war. Mine never malfunctioned and I use it as a "dirt gun". It is usually with me when I am camping or hiking. 5" barrel should give you a better site radius.

When it comes down to it, I can't honestly think of another pistol I'd rather have in a high-stress situation. 13+1 rounds of .45 ACP is enough to chew up a good deal of whatever's threatening you/standing in your way. It's a beastly weapon. Maybe too big size-wise for some people's tastes especially when it comes to CCW, but to me this gun (and a few other hi-cap .45's) just scream built for war. All red tape/politics/cost issues aside, you'd think the Military /Police would be better off carrying this kind of .45 (and maybe even this tactical model itself) as opposed to a Beretta M9 or 96 Inox or high cap 9x19/40 sw and what have you. Massize wound trama and relatively high capacity. MAYBE you can get off more accurate followup shots in a 9mm (not really my experience but your mileage may vary), still I know if my life was on the line, 14 rounds +p .45acp would be VERY comforting, much more so than any other combo I can think off.

I have one and though I lack much in the way of experience with other models, it has been a very rewarding purchase. For $500 new it was an easy choice, having done some research on capacity, features, accuracy (it is very accurate). It's easy to take apart and clean. I'll admit that it's a sizeable weapon, but I'm a big guy and the recoil is minimal which lends greatly to its accuracy. I may get a different weapon for CC, but only becuase mine lacks a thumb safety.

I have one - it's beside my chair in the living room and would be the pistol I grab if something's riling up the dogs. It's never had a failure of any kind and seems equally happy with light SWC target loads or military hardball ammo.

It is a big guy though, and if I were to do it again I think I'd take the 4" service model over my 5" tactical. I bought it for the sight radius but don't use it much for target shooting.

For anyone considering the purchase of any of the SA XD models there's this: The sights are hands down the most difficult to make move in their dovetails if wanting to do a sight change - so difficult that you'd better send it out for that or risk breaking your tools on the gun. :)

The XD 45 Compact Tactical (5 inch barrel, short grip) conceals just fine...

I have both the Compact and the Compact Tactical and the "big" one is just as concealable as the "little" one.

I carry them in a Galco Summer Comfort. The Compact is my wifes CCW pistol....the Compact Tactical is mine, I carry it sometimes but I prefer my 1911 (old habits die hard). I bought the Compact Tactical to convert to 45 Super and in that loading...it is considered a bit "much" for CCW.

The XD-45 is a workhorse. Its accurate and durable.

I would agree that the XD-45 Tactical is a bit large for CC but I have read many carry it.

The XD-45 Service (4 inch) is a 1911 lovers (or at least this one's) polymer dream. It points like a 1911, feels great in the hand, has a grip safety, optional thumb safety and 13+1 capacity.

Easily carried in a Supertuck.

One criticism: The XD-45 has weak factory mag springs. Because of this and in combination with the way the XD-45 ejects the spent brass some have experienced FTFs (mine was one of them). However a simple $7 mag spring replacement and the problem is gone.

got my 45acp tactical in june 2006. its been flawless since. clean it every few hundred rounds and its good to go.

has shot everything i have fed it just fine. even 500 rounds of very dirty wolf.

thinking about buying the compact service.

Yeah, my XD will never win a beauty pageant, but you talk about a gun that I know will go bang...right here, baby.
