There is an officer here who wants to go with the Springfield XD-9. The lieutenant in charge of firearms wants her to go with the Glock 19. So she is currently researching the XD to get a feel for it's performance. Any input would be appreciated. As you have probably figured out she wants to go with the Springfield - not the Glock.

One more thing - she's fired both of them and prefers the Springfield, but sometimes thigns aren't that simple.

My single firing of the XD9 showed it to have less kick than a 19, about the same accuracy. The ergonomics were wrong for me but better for others.

There was a good article a couple of months ago in Handgunner (I think) that compared the Springfield XD-9 to the Glock 17 (I know it's not the 19, but still a Glock). Sounded like basically the same preformance from both.

Personally, I like the feel of the XD over any Glock. The angle of the grip is better for my hands that the Glocks are and I shoot better because of it.

Good Luck.

Heres a good place to get all the info on the Xd that you need..........
XD Forums .......I own the XD in 357sig and love it, its my daily carry CCW gun. I dont like Glocks(Ive owned 3 of them) and in my estimation the XD is by far a better weapon. Its a safer gun, its very well made and the prices are right.

The XD 9 I shot over the summer was a nice pistol. I would try a search re: the XD & the original HS 2000 to find articles on the pistol. It's a good choice by the way.

Tell your friend to look for the reviews of the XD in Gun Tests magazine, www.gun-tests.com. They liked the XD9 and the XD40 a lot. They are like the Consumer Reports of gun magazines, they don't take any adverrtising. They aren't 100% reliable, but are better than the usual gun rag.

The biggest differences are:

Grip angle. The XD will have a more traditional grip angle, far more SiG or HP like than the radical angle of the GLOCK.

Sights. The XD will use any sights that will work on a SiG P Series.

The XD is a single action as opposed to the partially cocked firing method that GLOCK uses.

The XD has the trigger safety like the GLOCK, but also has the grip safety similar to what is found on the 1911.

The XD has a cocked indicator and a loaded chamber indicator. Both are designed so that they can be checked either visually or by feel.

The takedown on the XD is very SiG like.

both perform well, the main thing that i would consider is that the finish on the XD is not as durable as the Glock.

the newer Glocks also have a loaded chamber indicator.

I've been wondering how the internal safeties work on the XD. For
some reason I'm just a bit more leary because of the fully cocked striker.
How exactly is the striker held in place?

What factors makes you feel that this is a safer gun than the Glock?

its a toss up in safety imo. newer glocks have loaded chamber indicators though are the cheap extractor kind, not physical nor visible from both sides of the gun. newer glocks have built in locks. xd has a drop safety and grip safety plus the loaded chamber indicator. trigger is double action though for some reason atf labeled it single action.

the xd can safely shoot lead bullets which is a big no no for glocks.

I hate how both guns are block like not very good for ccw. glock 19 would be better for ccw. you can get legal hicaps for the xd-9 for reasonable price ie $20 xd-40 magazine with feed lips adjusted so 9mm and 40S&W works in the magazine. doesnt mean much for leo though believe you can get more rounds than a leo mag using this method. the best place for information is the hs2000talk.com discussion board. beretta magazines can work in the xd along with sig and S&W 59 mags. be carefull of ejector they break on xd's. another issue with xd's is the finish. even the stainless steel versions have developed rust like material on it even well cared for guns. a refinish job is a good investment. XD's should be priced in $350-$400 range but a nice springfield name makes it worth a $100 more than when it was just HS2000 and went for $300-$350. $429 is not bad. overall I will take a steyr M series any day over both but good luck trying to get a steyr m9 leo and use it as department gun.

I fired an XD40 a while back and I was very pleasantly surprised. Now the XD 9 is on my list for next year. And that will be it, the last pistol I'll need.
Yeah, that's the ticket, yeah, the laaaast one.

Well our officer won the battle - amazing! She located a Safariland Level 2 left handed holster for her Springfield and she qualified with it today. Actually she shot her highest score ever. She states that she likes it's feel and believes it to be more accurate then her last gun (SW-99). It is a done deal, though she has gotten a reputation for always wanting to be "different" when it comes to her sidearm.

While I think Glocks are perfectly fine, the ergonomics for me are just awful. I have yet to find a Glock that didn't feel as if I were holding one of those square bars of bath soap. Just clunky and uncomfortable. I do like the Springfield XD series much better. I like them enough that I own three. The XD9 is the most accurate 9mm that I've had the opportunity to fire. From a rest at 27 yards, I can get five rounds of 115gr Blazer FMJ into less than 2 inches. For cheap ammo, that's pretty impressive. The XD40 and the XD9 subcompact are equally nice. Your friend made a good choice. For some additional comments, check out Chuck Taylor's website for his views on the XD series.

FWIW,
