From what I read, the Springfield XD may be the most popular pistol in a long time, it seems to be managing what Glock couldn't do, in that it is finding more fans with the Sig and Beretta crowd than the Glock ever managed.

So it was that I scurried off to Gander Mountain to try one out. The sales assistant advised me that they sell more XD 9mms (and .40 magazines ;) ) than any other make they carry, and they carry the full Glock range.

I held the gun and instantly didn't like it, it felt just like a Glock and pointed high for me, the grip and trigger reach just didn't seem natural, but I did like the addition of the grip safety.

So I came away with no great impressions of what I'm sure is a fine pistol and I found myself wondering if I'm in a minority of one.

I don't like its looks or feel either. However that doesn't mean it's not a fine gun. It's just not for me.

I've not shot one, but have handled a few. I think it's a pretty slick piece. I liked it a lot better when it was the $300+ HS2000, but still...

not just you

My first impression when seeing one was that it was ugly . My second impression of one as that it just wasn't comfortable. Those two aspects did it for me. Although they may be a quality piece, I don't see myself ever owning one.
I am curious about another aspect of this XD... it was originally marketed as the HS2000 and nobody seemed to give it a second look - including the gun rags. Now that the identical gun has the springfield name on it, it's the greatest thing since sliced bread. Reason?

Nope, again!

I am not convinced that in twenty years we will still have XDs while I am pretty certain Glock will still be alive and GT will remain a great forum!

CAUTION! ANOTHER GLOCK HALF-TRUTH ABOVE!

Nice try. In another 20 years Glock Talk might still be a forum anyways.

well having never shot one my opinon doesnt hold much water. i just dont like their feel much. put one in my hand and it just didnt fit as well as my sw99. didnt like the grip safety, it was far too short in my opinion. dont like no de-cocker at all. espcialy with that little nub sticking out the back, atleast on my sw99 it doesnt stick out past the major part of the pistol to get caught on something i like having a decocker or totaly internal system like a glock. im ont a glock fan but the gun works and works well. nothing to really snag on clothing and it fires every time you pull the tigger, never mind if it blows up in you hand tho :D. the xd just seems very snag happy on loose clotheing to me when i stuck it in my belt or such. oh well not every gun is a walther rip off like my sw99 :D yea yea :D

No.

I didn't like what I initially saw in photos and didn't like what I saw later on in the flesh plus, I don't need a pistol made in Croatia.

Newton, Have you shot the thang?

Just wondering if you have shot the XD-9? Your post seems to discuss initial impressions and ergonomics.

Yeah, I own one. Swore I'd never own a (part) plastic gun. But, something about this one got me to actually shoot it. Works for me. Points naturally. A lot more naturally (for me) than the Glocks I have shot. Who knows (or cares) if it will be around in 20 years. If it stops working for me, it won't be! I'll have something else.

Find someone willing to let you shot one, then report back to us with your thoughts.

Newton, I would have to agree with NoBite. Go shoot one if you can. I have the HS version that I bought on a whim and I was very pleasantly suprised when I shot it. Mark

The XD IMHO has taken a liking to other pistoleros for several reasons.
1. Price. Its alot of gun for the money
2. Price. For 1 Glock, you could have an XD, holster and boxes of ammo
3. Springfields No Hassel warranty
4. Trigger of XD is slightly better out of the box than the Glock
5. The grip doesnt feel like a 2X4 :)

Friday, I saw Kcustom45 break a hanging clay at 35 yards with his girlfriend's XD-40.
First shot.
They work for some people quite well. I sort of like the pistol, but it isn't my first choice.

If XDs sold because their cheap than everyone would be carrying a jennings. They are alot of gun for the money. Very well made and backed up by SpringField. I own an XD in 357sig and love it. Within 2 more years the XD will put a hurt on Glock sales. Ugly is in the eye of the beholder.....there a nice looking gun in my book. You really need to shoot one before passing judgment otherwise its just BS. Ive owned 3 Glocks and would never own another. I carry my XD everyday and its very concealable. Shoots better than any Glock Ive ever owned, like they say...try it you'll like it. Theres a gun(9mm XD) in a range in Arizona that has over 176,000 rounds thru it with no problems and minimal cleaning, and one has never blown up in the users hand. Its a safer gun than the Glock also. Just because a gun has a high price doesnt mean its better....I also own a Colt XSE Government model ($820.00) My XD shoots just as well maybe even better.

I've shot the xd in 40 and dind't like it . You think it's goodlookin i don't think it is. I own the colt defender, markiv government model and a gold cup .I also have the g22&27 .SA is a good company and I would happily buy 1 of their american made pistols 1911 style, but not one of the croation made xd's .They are cheap and people who are frugal tend to go for the XD.I did not meen to offend you on your purchase I just don't agree. Your safety is your finger .It is no safer than any other quality weapon.Alot of people unfortunately do carry Jennings , rossi, brycoand high point .I don't think they are in the same league as the XD.What iwas pointing out is that they are a cheaper alternative to the other plastic pistols. If you are happy with it great,Ihope it gives you years of service.

Springfield 1911s are not entirely made in the U.S. There made in Brazil. Croatian made arms are some of the best in Europe. There is such a minor difference in the price of an XD and a Glock I dont think it would stop anyone from buying a Glock if thats what they really wanted. Theres nothing cheap about the gun at all, maybe the price is more down to earth than guns that KB in your hand. Just because it doesnt cost the same as a Gold Cup doesnt mean its cheap....maybe the Gold Cup is over priced. My Colt XSE was $820 out the door, My XD $440 out the door. Like I said Ive owned 3 Glocks and if someone gave me one Id sell it so quick your head would spin. Then Id go buy another XD in 40cal :D

I don't like them...

...one little bit. Makes no sense to have to clear the chamber in order to render an autoloader "safe." Not a fan of the "safe action" system either.

But then, that's just me - YMMV...

:banghead: :cuss: :neener: :what: :barf:  :fire:

I'm not gonna argue with you just cause you paid toooo much for both of yourguns the XSE goes for $699.down here and the XD out the door at my shop for $411.and some change . Like I said if you are happy great I hope you get many years of service from it . As for gun makers of Europe I dont think the croation makers of the XD are in the same league as SIg,HK,glock and FN. And if you didn't like the glock sooooo much why did you then purchase three of them.Makes no sense to me but hey to each his own .
Things i personnally don't like about the XD are the higher bore axis .small grip safety and the exposed striker tip in the back . Plus it looks like the bastard child of a glock and sig

I wanted a plastic gun, something simple, reliable, and inexpensive for home defense, but didn't like any of the Glocks. When I came across a good deal on XD-9, I decided to give it a chance. I couldn't believe how easy to shoot and accurate it was! Then my wife shot it, and she liked it so much that she claimed it hers. Like people above said - it's a pretty good gun for the money. It now has had well over 2000 rounds through it, and never choked, not once. I never regretted buying it, and if I ever need another don't-care-about take-it-anywhere gun, it'll be XD.
