I have a XD-40 service somewhere between 2500 & 3000 rounds malfunction free. It is accurate & reliable.

Excellent gun!
top quality and performance!
The competitors are: M&P 9mm Glock 19/17 Beretta PX4 9mm
I like the XD the best!
The best thing is to try all them out and see which one you shoot best on.
For example the Glock 19 is a few ounces lighter and more compact for concealed carry, however, some folks shoot much better on the XD.

Sounds like the XD is a good choice. I considered the Glock 19 but I liked the additional saftey in the XD's grip. Appreciate the comments.

I have an XD45 Service. Thumbs up.

It's easy to point and shoot, reliable, and has some nice features that the competition lacks (e.g. grip safety that locks the slide but allows a press check without ejecting the round, and keeps the gun on-safe while requiring no conscious effort to release).

The only downside to the specific gun you're looking at is that it's pretty big for a 9mm. I'd get a smaller version than a Service, if I really wanted a 9mm for some reason.

If I were planning to carry a big gun like that, I'd at least get it in .40 S&W, or the .45ACP that I have. Conversely, if I am going to have a 9mm, I'd rather have it in a smaller package like the subcompact. That's about the only advantage the 9mm round has: it fits in a smaller package.

I own 2 XD platforms - .40 Service Model and 9mm Subcompact.

Both excellent guns....reliable, accurate, and great ergonomics for me. They run any ammunition I've tried so far.

They're very good. So are the Glock and M&P. You should find lots of reviews if you search both the forums and google.

It's a fantastic weapon, and mine has never jammed after about 5K rounds. She's eaten everything I've fed her. I did have a problem with a magazine not locking the slide back on the last round, but that's it.

As reliable as it is, IMO it's a bit bulky to have in an IWB holster (keep in mind though that I've been concealing a 5" barrel with no problems). The bore axis isn't as low as, say, a Glock, but I still prefer XD over most other polymer guns. If I had to pick another polymer-framed pistol in 9mm, I'd go with an HK P30 (if I could afford it).

You might want to consider spending the extra money on an XDM -- match-grade barrel, more ergonomic, interchangeable backstraps, slightly longer magazine release, wider slide serrations, plus everything the normal XD has. Overall though, the changes are slight.

One thing I appreciate about the XD is how simple it is to field strip.

the Croats really did a fine job of designing this gun, the only con i can think of is the limited availability of factory spare parts

more and more parts have become avaliable since they were introduced, still nothing on the level of the glock but ok offerings are out there for key parts.

They're excellent pistols, built tough and highly reliable. I've never had a malfunction shooting all manner of 9mm rounds.

Some folks don't care for the slightly protruding guide rod, what Springfield calls a muzzle protector (the stated purpose of which on the original Croatian HS2000 was a bit different).

Hey, I never really noticed that before but now it bothers me. How does it protect the muzzle?????? What did the Croatians say as to why it protrudes?

Great gun. If it fits and you shoot it well, go for it. As I recall, the protruding guide rod was to prevent slide-out-of-battery disconnect if necessity required pressing the gun against something and shooting said something.

I think the idea is that because it does not retract as the slide moves rearward that it helps prevent a failure to return to battery.

I have owned two XD's for several years: a 9mm subcompact and 9mm service model (4"). I carried the sub for many years. It is a bit heavy at times and can bulky in an IWB holster; it is great in OWB leather. I also own a Kahr CW9 for IWB carry. Today I carry both firearms depending on dress requirements. All are great pistols and I will not consider replacing any of these pieces. Good luck on your decision.

The XD is a great gun no doubt! I have one myself and love it. However, it is a bit large for a carry gun IMO. The slide sits up higher than the Glock and the M&P, and its a bit heavier than both. To me, the best double stack striker fired 9mm is the Glock 26. It's lower profile, not to mention slightly smaller and lighter than the sub XD's and M&P's.

I have six Springfield XD's. Three XD-SC 9x19's (well, one was taken by my wife as her carry gun), one XD-M in 9x19, one 357 Sig Service Model and one .45 acp Service Model.

Out of over 50 handguns that I own, these are the ones I carry on a daily basis. They are dead nuts reliable and all are very, very accurate.

The key to carrying is the holster. A good holster makes all the difference in the world on carrying comfort and accessibility.

Hope this helps.

No 9mm for me at this time but I've had 3 XD 40s. The platform is so good now I'm bored with it.

... and that's good thing.

I have the XD 9mm Service and an XD .40 sub compact.

The whole line of XD's are very good guns but I find that the sub compacts are a little easier to conceal and just as accurate as the service models.

I love my xd. The most most comfortable duty weapon I've ever handled. You will LCD your xd/ welcome to the darkside.
