I just got my pistol permit and im looking to get something in 40 cal. I think i have it narrowed down between a Glock 22 or 23 or a Springfield XD 40 in 5 inch or 4 inch. I know both are great guns but i want to know some pros and cons from people that own either one. Also if you do own an XD, how do you like the grip safety? Thanks.

I have shot a few glocks and I own an XD 45 Tactical (5 inch).

I chose the XD because I prefer the feel of the XD and also like the extra safety. Never had a problem with mine and shoots great.

Both are great guns, both will have people who tell you the other is crap. Bottom line, they are probably the two most dependable pistols you could buy. Choose the one you prefer.

I own both, and both are excellent weapons that I would trust my life to any day - you really can't make a bad choice.
The XD feels much better in my hand, but has a crappy trigger. Sloppy, long reset, and the travel is generally off. The XD also has a very heavy combat recoil spring - much heavier than the equivalent Glock. I wish my Glock had a grip safety like the XD – I love this feature. It’s another safety feature that just stays out of the way. I’m hugely “Anti-Manual Safety”, so any safety that just works and doesn’t get in my way is good by me. The LCI on the XD is much more functional than the one on the Glock. The XD also has a fully supported chamber, but I never let that bother me on my Glock. The XD has a much higher bore axis than the Glock, which in theory increases muzzle flip, but I can’t tell the difference. However, it does give me the feeling that I’m looking OVER the top of my XD whereas I feel like I’m looking DOWN the top of my Glock. That’s probably just my perception. The XD is also much heavier than the Glock.
As far as my Glock, I have a Gen 3 and it’s just slippery all over. The grip and the slide. The XD has a decent texture on the grip and has both front and rear serrations on the slide. The tenifer on the glock slide is much more durable, but is also very slippery. When I train with the XD I can get hot and sweaty and still fight on, but with the Glock I start to feel like I’m holding a greased egg. I’ve bobbled a few malfunction drills on my Glock because I couldn’t get a solid grip on the slide when my hands were sweaty. I have the sandy grip tape on the Glock that has improved the frame dramatically but it didn’t stay on the slide. The Glock trigger is also miles above the XD’s – it is solid. Clean takeup, crisp press, short reset, no slop. Glock parts are also a commodity – easy and cheap to get almost anywhere. The accessory market for Glock is also far outpaces the XD market, though as the XD has caught on, most manufacturers of after market accessories are supporting both platforms more consistently.
So, in summary, I truly feel they are a wash. They both have pros and cons, but nothing that makes one stand out more than the other. Both are flawless shooters. I typically carry my Glock more because the Compact (4”) has a smaller grip than the XD Service (same 4”), making it easier to conceal for me. But I wouldn’t hesitate to carry the XD.
I know, I probably didn’t make it any easier for you, and in reality you should just get one of each. I would start with the XD, then graduate to the Glock later.

BTW - have you tried shooting .40 yet? It's not a caliber to learn on... I would borrow or rent one first. A G23 is not for the faint of heart...

I tried the XD-40 and the muzzle flip I felt with it wasn't to my liking at all. I don't mean "I fired a couple rounds" I mean my friend had one and we put a few hundred rounds through it and while it didn't fail neither of us liked it all that much. I HATE the feel of the grip safety it made me feel like I had to squeeze the grip way too hard even though I didn't and it made my accuracy horrible with it. The .40 is also a little more expensive than the 9mm... the muzzle flip made the .40 kind of annoying to shoot much of. I ended up going with a glock 19 over an XD and I have zero complaints. I really prefer the Glock and really don't miss shooting that XD at all.

I have Xd 45 and Glocks both. I love my XD but I have to give the edge to the Glock for a much better trigger. The grip safety is of no importance to me. I have a G19 that shoots well and easy. A G29 in 10mm far out powers the 40 but takes a little more practice to master.

I had a 9mm XD and I still have my glock 23C. It's funny how some of the other guys are complaining about the XD trigger. I thought my XD 9's trigger was much better than my glock's. The only reason I don't have my XD anymore is because I want the sub compact version. Either one is a great choice and I like the glock 23C because there is very little muzzle flip with the porting. I have to give the edge to the XD though. It points very well and personally I prefer the XD trigger to the glock. I also agree with Walkalong about the grip safety, you'll never notice it.

I side with the Glock trigger in this one. The XD is a great gun and I really like the XD45 but the Glock trigger, I am more used to, can shoot it better and faster, the XD's reset is not as good IMO. Eventually got rid of the XD's as I did not (after shooting Glocks for 20+ years) want to learn the XD's reset and the XD came with nothing I needed on a gun, my stock Glocks are fine...Gosh I hope I don't have an AD :uhoh: ;)

I would get the XD before the M&P
but in 9mm the Glock is the choice.
In 40 ? probably still get the Glock.
In 45 I would probably go with the XD because the Glock 45's are a bit to fat for me.

I have owned both, the Glock wasn't as accurate as the XD ( not by much ) and the Glock destroyed the brass. I had so much ballooning in the web it exceeded safe dimension for reloading ( full chamber support matters ) Also the grip angle on the Glock wasn't to my liking. Google search Glock 40 blowups, Glock owners will defend to the death its all the AMMO, but I haven't seen this phenomena in guns with full chamber support. I think some may be due to bullet setback, but not all, especially after what I have seen on the police range with various factory ammo brands, brass Ballooning!. I own numerous 40's and the only one to expand the brass in the web area to this extreme are the Glocks. I haven't problems with Glock 9mm's, matter of fact I think they are one of the best out there in 9mm.

The XD has been 100% reliable, accurate and has better pointing characteristics than the Glock in my hand. I also bought a XDm which runs about $100.00 more, I think its well worth the price difference. match barrel, great trigger, short reset, grip texture is great, and EASY to tear down for cleaning. Also XDm comes with 3 grip inserts for small, med, and large hands.

I prefer the Glock, but that is really all it is, a matter of preference. I carry a G23 for a duty weapon and like it. I have on a couple occassions messed around with two XD's, one in 9mm and one in 45 and like the Glock better, for me, the Glock feels better in my hand and I shoot it better (probably because that is what I train with the most though). Until recently I carried a G19 off duty and liked it too. Your best bet is to try them out before you buy them if you can like everyone else has said.

Both are good reliable guns, both are accurate. I bought the XD-45 Service (4 inch). It just felt better in my hand. I like the grip safety, you don't notice it.

I've shot both and just liked the feel of the Springfield - it really is a personal preference. I own a .45 XD compact and a .40 XD sub-compact. Both are easy to shoot, accurate and from my perspective a better fit versus the Glock.

I've got an XD 45 and a Glock 19. I carry the Glock and the XD is my house gun. My XD has a smoother trigger, comfortably holds a ridiculous amount of .45 ACP, and is an extremely reliable gun. I've had zero malfunctions wth it. The grip safety has never bothered me in any way.
My Glock 19 is light and holds 15 rds of 9mm, has a decent duty trigger, and like my XD, has had zero malfunctions. The lack of a grip safety does not bother me in the slightest.
All in all, they are pretty much the same gun. Both have given me hours of enjoyment and I'd trust either one to protect my life in a heartbeat. Whichever you pick will be an excellent choice. You can't go wrong with either one!

I would go with

Springfield XDm; 16 + 1, match grade barrel, great ergonomics, lifetime warranty. I have owned mine for approximately one year and love it.

I'm an XD person, and you'd "probably" find a few more people liking XD than Glock nowadays, but they are both great firearms, I wouldn't mind owning either.

"YOU" have to shoot Glock, XD, AND XDM and decide for yourself. If you can't shoot them, at least handle them all and see which one feels right in your hand, but I would try to shoot them. Only you can make that decision, but be happy knowing that you narrowed down to 2 ( I should say 3 including XDM) geat handguns.

Glock for a number of reasons:
They are about as close to dead reliable as a mechanical device gets. Availability of repair and aftermarket parts. Simplicity of design makes them "Fall Off The Log" easy to repair in the event of a failure.
In a EOTWAWKI situation, (God Forbid) these are the differences that could mean life or death.
From a purely subjective view point, the lower bore axis of the Glock makes it easier for me to shoot fast and well. While the XD is a decent pistol, between the two, I'll take the Glock.
Guess I should add that Glocks are not my favorite shooters, too many other better platforms like the CZs and 1911s that perform better.

Shoot them both, get the one you like the best. Both are extremely reliable.

I've never noticed the grip safeties when holding a 1911 or XD.

i own both, they are both great guns, but my all time favorite handgun is the sa xd service model in 40. it is accurate, and with over 13,000rds through it, it is as reliable as it can be.

the only advantage that i see to the glock 23 is it is easier to conceal, and that is just by a hair, as i ccw iwb, and either one is more than concealable.

there is no gun that i trust more, or shoot better with than my sa xd.

To add a different slant: check the Beretta Px4 in .40. Reputed to be one of, if not the, softest shooting .40's. I have the Storm in 9mm, and love it to death. Unless you're totally against DA/SA, give the Px4 a look.

Shoot both. I have absolutely no problem with the XD, but I personally prefer the Glock. It's your choice.
