My custom 5" 686 dash4 is my favorite revolver.

It's a round butt

I have these old grip that came on a 586-2 I foolishly traded for a 629 years ago.

They seem to fit solidly and unless you look at the back, they look wonderful.

Maybe I'll try to get some wood and fill in the gap.

What do you guys think ?

Same gun with some Ahrends, which feel a bit too skinny for me.

Sile, IIRC made square butt stocks for round butt S&Ws. I have one for a J-frame and found it unsuitable for CCW, but that's just me.

It has been known to happen.

This 60-4 was rescued from a tactical store where it had been abandoned in favor of some bottom feeder.

The grips feel better to me than the factory rubber abominations that were in the box.

The wood grips have no maker marks, but looks like Ahrends style to me. They fit so tightly they are difficult to remove.

I looked at the S&W Forum...

Here is an x-ray I took of my 625-7 .45 Colt Mountain Gun that has round to square conversion grips from Kim Ahrends. They come standard with eh extra wood at the rear. From the side yours looks great...I like some of the ideas given to fill the gap.

I found the round butt on my 586 uncomfortable when letting .357's go. The recoil would cause it to slip up and on some of the hotter loads, the resulted shifted position was like hammer bite. The square butt conversion options made it much easier for me. That little bit more gripping surface was night-day.

I have some exactly like yours, also on a j-frame. I believe they are made by Altamont. Good company.

Your is a fairly common conversion!

It's easy if you have at least average ability to work with wood. You can order small samples of most any kind of wood. Make a template and "go to it" with common wood working tools. You'll end up gluing the filler piece to one side. I did this modification/conversion for a friend's 629 many years ago.

It's impossible to get the extra piece to match exactly so don't drive yourself crazy!

Sorry no pics, no camera phones back in the day!

Smiles,

I use old Herrett Shooting Star Conversion Grips on my round butt S&W 637-2 Airweight 9mm revolvers. 20210309_095610.jpg
