Squeaking gun leather

I bought an IWB leather holster. It was very dry and squeaked like "clown in town". :banghead: It developed two cracks from being so dry. Being experimental I soaked it in CVS baby oil , hypoallergenic mineral oil. The leather drank like a horse in the desert. Kind of fun. I soaked all my other leather holsters too. Drying up it looks promising. Have anyone else done this? How did it work?

Bad Idea.


Oil will weaken leather, and make it softer. A quality leather holster is supposed to be rigid, though it shouldn't be creaking or cracking either. Oil is for baseball gloves, not holsters.

Not to mention that now your holsters will all stain your clothes with nice big grease spots!

Should be okay long as you get off all the excess oil. I use mink oil.

Very bad idea to use any sort of mineral based oil.

If you must oil a holster, use Pure Vegetable cooking oil, or any number of oils sold for use on saddles, boots, & fine leather goods.

Mineral based oils will eventually cause the destruction of the leather fibers & the thread used to hold it together!

Most squeaks can be cured with Talcum Baby Powder worked into the offending seams.

rcmodel, won't vegetable cooking oil go rancid? I've always heard that that's why it shouldn't be used to oil wood cutting boards.

Pure vegatable oil won't go rancid. It is the stuff that gets in it that does (animal fat, food bits, meat juice, etc).

RC turned me on to Vegatable Oil for new holsters and it is really amazing.

rcmodel. all those you have suggested will soften the leather. In most cases that is good (for saddles), but for CCW holsters...Not so good. You might see if you can find a leather wax that will not soften the leather or just let it wear in. How loud is the squeek or creak?

I use some stuff I found at Sportsmans' Warehouse called 'ID'...short for Idaho (I guess) where this was invented. The stuff was invented by a guy with the Hot Shots who was tired of having his boots crack, squeek and dry out from all of the retardant and heat that they were around. This stuff works very well on any good leather. The leather won't soften, but it also won't be dry and squeaky. The leather stays in really good condition and will last far longer with this stuff.

One thing about horsehide, is that it doesn't squeak much. Sometimes not at all.
