Hello All,

I'm considering the purchase of a stainless steel Cimarron Model P. This particular gun has charcoal blued screws. When the finish on the screws deteriorates I would like to be able to polish them and have a nice looking all stainless gun. Do you guys know if the charcoal blued screws are also stainless steel or could they be carbon steel?

Thanks

I could be wrong but I don't think stainless steel takes blue very well. That's why its "stainless."

They are probably steel screws. Stainless bolts don't work very well drilled and tapped into stainless, they tend to gall and can be a bear to get out. You could remove the bluing and buff the screws but then you'd have to spend extra care with the heads rusting.

The screws are not charcoal blued, but rather fireblued (aka "niter blued"). Both are a heat rather then chemical process. In theory a stainless steel alloy could be heat blued, but I suspect that the ones in question are regular carbon steel. You might check with Cimarron and see.

In either case corrosion of the screws is unlikely. I wouldn't worry about it.

It sounds like your looking the nickel SAA. The Uberti stainless is all stainless, even the screws. Could you post a link?
I have the Stainless "Outfitter" from Uberti in 5" barrel. Great revolver, easy to clean too!

Take the screws out in put them in a cup of vinegar for about an hour. Then pull them out rinse them in hot water. dry them good. put a little bit of polish on them and your set. just oil the threads a little. they will match the gun perfectly.

Scrat, thanks for the advice. JCT, This is a used gun sitting in a local shop so I can't post a link. I could swear this thing is stainless but of course I could be wrong.
If it turns out to be nickel do you think it would be a mistake to buy it? Can Uberti plating be trusted?

Race, I dont know if this helps or not but I bought a Walker off Auction Arms. It looked like an incompleted kit gun in the pics. I bought it and almost peed my nickers. It was a stainless. Only the barrel and cylinder are stainless. The frame is case hardened. It had a broken latch retaining spring. I put on a new latch after I removed the bluing with vinegar and shined it up you have to look real close to see that it isnt stainless. I shot it today. It was almost a pleasure to clean. If thats stainless, grab it. You can tell eith a magnet. The stainless wont attract as well as steel. It will still attract but you are able to tell the difference
