Imagine all your firearms are gone; fire, theft or natural disaster has cruelly struck home. Adding insult to injury there's no insurance. You've got to start over, all over again. There's no pot of money to help out, just what you usually spend.

Where would you start? What would you have to replace, what would you do differently?

I did that 10 years ago the natural disaster divorced me. I left with my car and $12.50 in my pocket. I wouldn't care to do it again, but it can be done!

OK, I'll take a stab at it. The first six in order of purchase:

1. 12 gauge pump (870 Express)
2. Pocket size handgun (Keltec or snubby)
3. .22 bolt or semi rifle (Ruger or Remington)
4. Full size handgun (1911 or L Frame S&W)
5. .308 bolt action rifle (Remington, Ruger, or Savage)
6. .17 HMR or .22 mag rifle (CZ or Ruger)

James

As I recall it was:

1. Mauser (isreali rework in .308)
2. Ruger 1022
3. Reuger single six
4 Winchester 1300
5. Springfield 1903

Start with the most practical weapon--the pistol. Buy another just like it, get more mags.

Next, need a shotgun for point defense. $100 with get you a Farmer's Friend. Load it and stick it by the bed until you get an 870, and then another.

If you live out where Hayzeus left his sandals in the woods, get a .22. After that everything else is a discretionary toy.

Of course, all that is from my perspective and my circumstances--urban dweller. If I lived out where I had to fight bears and pumas to get to the outhouse, I'd buy a solid rifle (.308, '06, .270, inter alia) first. :D

Well, if I had to do it over again :( , my list in priority order:

1) SIG-SAUER .45 caliber P220A
2) SIG-SAUER 9m/m P228
3) Smith & Wesson 6" 686 .357 magnum
4) Springfield WW-II G.I. .45
5) Smith & Wesson (old model) 60 .38 Special
6) Smith & Wesson 39-2 9m/m
7) Smith & Wesson 37-2 .38 Special
8) Para Ordnance single-stack, SA 1911 SSP
9) Series 70 Colt Gold Cup
10) Bersa Thunder DT .380 ACP

some I don't currently have, other's I do! :D

1st. Would be CCW. Good used Colt 1911 Series 70 or 80. I can take it from there.

2nd. Would be a Remington 870 SP. I could use that for many types of hunting and sd as well.

3rd. Would be a decent bolt action .22 rf. used and not abused would be fine. Remington 541-T would work.

At this point I would be able to save up and get to add some other things. I don't think that I would end up with what I have now.

box stock 1911 by Colt. then some revolvers, then some . . . . . and eventually end up about where i am now. deevorce did this to me in 1968. so, if it happens to you, know that you can claw your way out of this hole, and, end up with a more organized collection instead of a bunch of miscelanous firearms.

Happened here also.(burglary) Around 20 years ago, and the kids were young then, so money was tight. Took many years to recoup the loss, but hey, I'm a little smarter, ( just a little  ).

Now have lots more, and the collection is still growing.
Was left with one of the best, a 6" Colt Python, (Great Uncles, had it on duty)
Got started back with a used 870, and went from there.

CA gun a month club

I have a whole bunch of handguns (long guns too), but here in CA, you can only buy one new handgun a month. So even if I had insurance money, it would take forever to replace my handguns. Then there is the fact that some of my current handguns are not on the CA approved list and couldn't be replaced in any event. This is why I have a better than average safe.

First thing I would buy is a box of tissues... because I would definately need them if all of my guns were destroyed/lost.

Its hard to think of what I would start with.

Cyanide

After I got through screaming...

1) Glock 19
2) Remington 870 12 ga., 21" turkey barrel or a 26-28" field barrel and an 18" riot barrel
3) Ruger 10-22
4) AR-15 carbine
5) Good .308 bolt gun, Remington, Winchester etc. hunting rifle with good glass
6) Good .22 pistol (where would I ever find another Beretta Jaguar/70 series?)

That would hold me for a while...

Didn't we just have this thread a couple months ago? To start back up, would dip into savings and immediately purchase:
1. 5" 1911
2. Rem. 870 or Mossberg 500
3. S & W 4" .357
4. Win. Mod 70 or Rem. 700 in .30-06, Leupold VX-II
5. Ruger 10-22

my house burnt down 3 years ago, lost 2 Ar's. rem. 1100, ruger P89, 10/22 SKS and a colt anaconda, and thousands of rounds of ammo. (the fire chief asked me "how much ammo did you have in there!!!" ) i had a couple guns in a cheap walmart fire safe and a rem 700 sendero 300 win mag at the gunsmith. the guns in the fire safe survived. WAIT before you start crying for me, i had insurance, and much to my excitement my insurance co. had recently change its rules and ALL my guns were covered :what: but i started over none the less :D beside replacement i have picked up a couple M1A's, macs, colt commander .45's 10/22. i now have topnotch fire safe. i now only keep my commanders (1 house gun 1carry gun) and my M1A bush rifle in the house. if iwere to LOSE all my guns for whatever reason my first replacements would be Colt Commander .45 and M1A Bush

I agree with the few here that had their acquisition in the following order:

1) Preferred “always†pistol for CCW
2) Preferred shotgun for home defense
3) Preferred type of .22 rimfire for fun time
4) Quality safe in hopes of prevent future collection from suffering same fate as the last.

Afterwards, I'd resume collecting C&R rifles, albiet from scratch.

ASAP:
870: police trade-in
Good-grade .22 rifle: CZ-452 or Biathlon, or an old Remington or Winchester

then,

Marlin 336 in .30-30
Older Colt or Smith 4" revolver in .357, .38spl. or .45ACP

eventually:

AR for HP matches
.22 revolver in the same frame as the Colt or Smith above
1911 and a .22 conversion kit
Pretty SxS double in 12, 20 or 28 ga
Bolt rifle in .308, .30-'06 or .270
Good SAA clone

--and each purchase is accompanied by lots of ammo.

Say it ain't so!

I'd get another 870 first, and two barrels. Nothing is as versatile as a shotgun.

A good .357 DA revolver would soon follow.

I'd spend a lot of time working on the rest.

First thing I'd replace is the one I use the most: the Glock 27 for everyday carry.

Then a more accurate handgun for heavier-duty applications, an HK USP, but this time in .45 rather than my .40.

Then a rifle, but this time in .308 rather than .223. Probably an AR-10, or maybe the Springfield SOCOM-16.

After that it'd be back to whatever's fun to fire.

1) Glock 23 - Good, reliable, middle of the road pistol. It can do the most, and is the one I have the most training with at this point.

2) Baretta Storm (or other, less expensive, composite carbine which fires .40sw) - In case anything really bad goes down in the near future... Including HD against multiple intruders and Chinese invasion. lol

3) 870 - HD

4) Krebs custom AKlone VEPR. Replaces the storm as my SHTF rifle/plinker. Baretta Storm becomes the trunk gun/girlfriend's plinker.

5) Rem 700 in 30-06. In case I get the urge to go hunting.

6) 10/22... varmants and plinking

7) Glock 27 because it's almost summertime

8) s&w 500 for hiking in places w/ bears

I guess that really covers all the basics.

Are there any 2nd amendment supporting insurance compaines out there?
Illinois Farmers Insurance. I have my house and vehicles through them. They offer a $10k firearms rider on your house policy for around $70 a year. Cheaper than the NRA insurance.

No list or serial numbers are required, but if you want over $10k, then they need them I am told.
