So, Ive decided to go with the poll winner from the last thread I had up, and do the .30-06AI.
The genesis for this build was pretty much the same for most of my random ideas.
I bought some cheap part I had no real need for, this time it was an old Shilen/Brownells .308 barrel off ebay.
...heh least this one was way cheaper in the long run than that .280AI die set I got for 12 bucks or something......
I then mentioned that I had it to my FFL buddy who decided he wanted to learn to do a barrel swap, and ream in a short chamber (very short as it were). So I bought a old savage 110 off Gunbroker.
After waffling on chamberings (and shooting up all the surplus ammo he had in the factory 06 barrel) He signed the gun over to me, and I just need to register it before yanking the barrel off and getting started. Which I should have time to do Friday on my day off.
Gonna get started this weekend, on the basic fitting, and ordering reamers, gauges, and a crowning tool.
here are the parts that Ive currently got on hand.
Savage 110 from the early 90s i think.
Guns in ok shape for a working rifle.
The barrels got sort of a weird taper to the very front, which makes me wonder if it wasnt carried around in a scabbard or something like that. Actions unusually smooth for a savage.
The triggers been messed with. It was sticky when we got it in, and would let the firing pin drop as the bolt handle closed. Hold the trigger forward and let the bolt down and it was fine...just.....interesting. took it apart today, and found the spring tension adjusted to nothing.
Came in a ramline stock which im not a fan of in the slightest.
sellers picture.
just took a few
Barrel is 26" carbon, little rusty on the out side, but pristine on the inside. Chamber is .308 and twist is 1-10.
The gun also came with a Weaver Kaspa 3-9x40, which is amusingly a step up from the scope the gun was listed with, an old simmons 8 point, so im not sure what happened there. Im going to put my Athlon Midas btr on, since my buddy kapu'd my Burris ffE1 4.5-14x42.
Should be done by next weekend, or there 'bouts. If my buddy can come over to do the barrel work.
Ill order dies and brass, as well as some new projectiles (and looks like I just won an old choate sporter stock on ebay) to go with the 165 hornadys I have on hand. Not sure what yet, maybe try the 178eldxs again, they did well in my Bergara. Ill also figure out what size recoil lug I need and order that soon as I can pull the barrel on the gun.
So this should all be done fairly quickly.
