State Scorecards

Mizzou rocked a 4, but they still have us as requiring a permit to purchase for pistols. That was repealed last fall. I think they're going to have to recount and give us a 2 or 3!!!

Currently tied for third with PawPaw. ;)
RT (who can buy a pistol anywhere in the state with no permit or waiting.)

I'm surprised that Maine scored as high as it did. Looks like we're not as well off as I had thought. Darn, looks like I'll have to move.

.
California is unsurprisingly, ashamedly, DFL at #50. 79/100 in the Brady scorecard.

What's really frightening is the Brady's wish list: Report Lost/Stolen Guns (confiscation assist), Registration, "Safety" Standards, Record Keeping (May police maintain gun sale records?) for a just a few. And the wildly slanted wording of the site.

This is the face of your Master.

If MO granted me the right of carrying on my college campus, I would definitely oblige my General Assembly by taking them up on the offer. I'd love to know I had that extra measure of personal safety if a VT-type incident came to my school. Hearing about fellow students (even fellow engineering majors) backed into the corner of a classroom without any form of defense really got to me. I won't do it if it's not legal, but I'd carry to campus every day otherwise. I like that we earned a 2 or 3 out of 100 (with the noted change accounted for), But "I'd prefer to take a handgun to class legally for -1 Alex!" There, I've labeled myself a nerd/geek, but who cares.

I was happy to see that Kansas was in the lower 50 percent, standing at No. 7. While I was on that site, I browsed around and was astounded to see the number of murders that guns are committing! :what: :what: I figure that these guns must be the so called smart gun complete with their own Micro-chips to be able to perform such dastardly feats.

Maryland of course is number 3 on the list, behind NJ and Calif. When I become a resident of West Virginia I will move down on the list substantially with only 6 points out of 100. I guess that is because WV doesn't have a 'stand your ground' law yet.
Maybe in a couple of years there will be a majority of states vieing for last place on the list! :)

CALIFORNIA
Score: 79 out of 100 points

WE'RE NUMBER 1! WE'RE NUMBER 1!

wait...what?

If their actual mission was to stop violence, then shouldn't the score somehow reflect the violence that the laws have helped stop? I'm sure some egghead could come up with an equation to determine the "correct" score. Oh wait it's just further proof that they are only interested in limiting our freedoms, not protecting us. At least 79 is only a high C :)

I've always been curious, who exactly are "The Bradys" and why does anyone give them the time of day? Why doesn't our side have a superhero like that. I guess because Ted Nugent is crazy, huh. That didn't stop them though.

Florida:

SHOOT FIRST
Is deadly force allowed to be a first resort in public? Yes
Florida - The state does allow the use of deadly force as a first resort in public. This dangerous law permits the average citizen to bypass our entire justice system by permitting him or her to assume the role of police officer, prosecutor, judge, and executioner.

Ha! Ha! Hahahahahahahahahaha!!!

:banghead:

Seems like a good enough reason to me to not commit a crime there :)

Oh ya, saw this on the sidebar, and couldn't stop laughing at the irony!

CHILDPROOF HANDGUNS
Are only authorized users able to operate handguns? No

California - There is no state law mandating that all new handguns be sold with 'personalized' handgun technology that would only allow the authorized user to operate the firearm. Childproof handguns play an important role in helping to prevent unintentional shootings among children and to deter suicides among minors.

Does this technology even exist outside of the movies? I would certainly be interested in it. Of course it would have to allow my wife and children to fire it as well. And I'm sure that noone has ever killed themselves with something other than a gun.

LIMIT BULK PURCHASES
Is there a one-handgun-per-month limit on sales? Yes

California - State law restricts gun-trafficking by limiting the number of handguns that can be purchased at one time. No more than one handgun may be purchased by a person within a 30-day period. This restriction on bulk-buying of handguns helps prevent gun traffickers from buying handguns at gun stores and reselling them on the street to criminals.

What part of "reselling them on the street to criminals" do they not understand? They are committing a crime by reslling without "background checks" and they ar commiting a crime by selling to felons. What makes you think this one more law will stop them from breaking it as well.

How the heck did Hawaii and Illinois beat (lower score than) New York??? It boggles the mind! I dont have to declare a firearm when im pulled over, I can carry concealed almost anywhere, and there isnt hardly a single store in the state that prohibits carry, because they dont expect anyone to be! Its a great place to CCW.

The Silver State checks in at 11/100! If not for Las Vegas, we would be even lower.

On a side note, does anyone else feel dirty for just going to that site? Almost makes me want to reboot my computer.

Oklahoma ties for LAST!!!

Bells/ whistles/ fireworks.

It ought to earn us a holiday off work to go shooting/hunting just for being last in the brady list.

I couldn't be more proud.

ditto that!!!

I didn't realize you folks in KY and OK had us out here in AZ so soundly beat (according to the Brady folks). I'm going to have to pay more attention.

That said, the report card is certainly not all-inclusive. FL, for instance, doesn't allow open carry, thought they score pretty well at the Brady site.

thats the 1 sore point i have with OK. no open carry

Wow.

Massachusetts - State law restricts the sale of large capacity, rapid-fire ammunition magazines in excess of 10 rounds. This restriction applies to all firearms.

I love the incredibly sensationalizing language they use.

Tied for 3rd-worst (with CT). I'm also surprised NY and Hawaii beat us. Hmph.

Dope

thats the 1 sore point i have with OK. no open carry

Well then, it looks like KY wins the tiebreaker with open carry :)
If we could just get the campus carry thing fixed we would score a perfect 0.

Yep, if we can mannage to get a campus carry law passed that should be a solid victory for Ky. Look out OK, we are going for a tie breaker!

oh my god kentucky got a 2 we must be just a bunch of gun totin hillbillies. :neener:thank god for the second amendment. god bless kentucky

Florida
8 out of 100
We're working harder though.

Interesting that, as far as I know, 2 of Florida's "failing" criteria, microstamping and "child proof guns" don't exist yet.

Even California not restrictive enough for them

Holy crap! Look at California! http://www.bradycampaign.org/legisla...tate.php?st=ca How can anyone stand to live there? You poor, poor, b@$+@rd$ Seriously. My heart goes out to you.:(

As does mine, I can't imagine what that would be like. Actually I can, but I prefer not to...

At least 79 is only a high C :)

I guess that's what gets me the most. Even a place like the PRK still isn't restrictive enough for them.

As for Alabama, we could do better, 15/100 : 19/50. I suspect it's because of this:

LIMITS ON CONCEALED HANDGUN PERMITS
May police limit carrying concealed handguns? Yes

Alabama: State law allows police chiefs and state sheriffs to prohibit people from carrying concealed weapons (CCW) in public. Police chiefs and state sheriffs "may issue" CCW permits that allow people to carry concealed weapons if police believe it is in the interest of public safety. No special training is required for anyone approved by local law enforcement to carry concealed weapons. People with CCW permits from some other states are allowed to carry concealed weapons in Alabama. Also see: School Zones.

At least in practice, AL is very nearly "shall issue"

We got 2 points for colleges banning weapons. If the bill allowing them gets passed, I guess we'll have a zero!
