i have been wanting to try a steel plate competition for a while and finally a local range (black diamond gun club) is hosting one so i am gonna try it. i was wondering if there is anything i am gonna need to get? i am either gonna shoot my para or my MKII or both? i have never shot in any competition at all so i have no clue what im getting into

It depends on what org. or local rules you are shooting under. The factory Para would be a 'stock auto' class pistol (you won't compete against revolvers, open guns or .22 with this class). You will probably need a holster and may or may not need mag holders if it's more than one plate rack at a time.

The .22 will often start from the 'low ready' position--ready to shoot and held at a 45 deg angle down from level. You'll only be competing against .22 cal. If the plates aren't .22cal plates, just hitting them will count as a hit. They may not have to fall. It depends on what they set up.

It's a lot of fun, and you'll enjoy it. Go. They'll explain all the rules and safety requirements if you mention you're new to the game.

Here we run the plate rack and hit a 'stop popper' to finish.
Ours is a 'time only score' with penalty seconds added for misses.

Just go have fun at the first one... attend the "new shooter's" brief. Every club I've ever been to has one. Safety is the first objective.

At our Steel Challenge match... we have 4 bays. They will usually have 3 "official" stages setup, and one they created themselves. Split the people into 4 groups and go to it. If it's a true "Steel Challenge" match... google that and you can see the rules and course setups there.

Basically... you'll shoot 5 strings, they'll take the best 4 for your score. There will be 5 steel plates, one will be red. You shoot the other 4 in any order you want, then the "stop" plate. Draw from the holster (surrender position), no reloads on the clock. One stage has you moving laterally a short distance, but other than that, it's all stationary.

Pretty simple, really. It's a blast and I haven't missed one since I started 6-7 months ago.
