Best all steel 9mm for competitive shooting?

$1600 wouldn't get the "best" setup for cowboy action shooting.

If you want to shoosteel and 3 gun I guess the P18 would work but wouldn't be the best tool for the job.

I started with the cz 75B and put over 60K rds throught it in comp.--mostly my reloads.
Broke two slide stops over the years. I also added most all the upgrades available. Great gun.

I recently upgraded to the CZ Custom Shop's 9mm 75 Shadow. I only have about 800 rds throught it without any issues. . The action was worked and polished and the SA trigger set at my 3# request. It was ready to run when I got it. The optional Hajo rear Adj. Comp. Sight is exactly like the Competition fixed sight but height adjustable to adjust for load changes. The target sent with it had a 1" group at 25yds , all in the bull.

They had already cleaned and oiled it. It was ready to run OOB. I've run five different bullet reloads through it and all ran smoothly and shot to point of aim out to 25yds. 124 plated RN, 124 plated FP, 124 JHP, 125 JHP and 130 plated RN.

I lightened the DA pull another two pounds or so with another hammer spring and it shot 100% with a little over 100 rds since.

This is a production/SSP class gun. It also works very well for Steel Challenge .
If you want to move up to Limited or Open class like recommended above, there are many more options available, most based on a 1911-type frame or the CZ Czechmate for 9mm major. ($2995 ready to run with a C-Mor red dot :D)

Other than that, all I can say is I really like the pistol. You can stay well under your price with all the options.

That is a beautiful CZ. Very nice!

pgt thanks for the info on the tanfoglio but i looked into it and the possible poor parts avail in my area counts it out .

allaroundhunter is right i did not mention wanting a SA/DA but now that i think about it it would be nice to keep myself eligable for as many classes of comp as possible also i am an average skill level shooter right now hoping to improve but it would be nice for a while to keep myself in the lower comp levels to get my feet wet. also i hear that the sti can be finikey with ammo is that true because i would like to be able to atleast pratice with cheap ammo.

pilot. And 1sow thanks for the info that sounds verry promising and i am leaning that direction how would i go about ordering one with the mods you reccamend do you have a build sheet or list of in your opinion must haves for the build thanks all this place is great

Agree that a CZ75 would serve very well.
Wait it out for the CZ75 Shadow from CZ Custom/Angus Hobdell like 1SOW's and you will have a fine gun.

Me?
I shoot a Colt and a Springfield. But at current prices, they would push your $1600 budget pretty hard.

You could work your way up the chain at STI; Spartan, Trojan, Rangemaster*, Sentry; However much of that $1600 you wanted to spend.

*Rangemaster has full length dustcover that IDPA doesn't approve, I'd have to go $90 more for the Sentry.

Read Todd Green's endurance test of a 1911 in 9x19mm...
The last report from Todd Green is "32,893 rounds 11 stoppages 0 malfunctions 3 parts breakages". Totally unacceptable for a competition gun. .:what:

Look on the CZ Custom site for optional models available---there are many versions with different options included.

When you find one that comes closest to what you prefer contact the Custom Shop by email, phone or through the real CZ forum - http://www.czfirearms.us/ a OR talk to STUART through a P.M. on the CZ forum about what you want to add or change.

There are ideas all across the board here so far. How about going to some of the competitions you are looking at competiting in and see what the top 10 folks are shooting?

:D Good idea! And, as you know, given any average shooting competition (excluding "Open" guns), none of the guns the top 10 shooters will be shooting will be $1,600-$3,000+ exotics.

Lightly modified Glocks, M&Ps, 1911s, etc. ... it's the Indian, not the arrow as they say! But I imagine that was the hidden message you were sending.

Not to mention there are a few games/divisions that you might not like. So "the best" changes the answer by quite a bit.

$1600 could set you up in production completely with "the best" or be a good down payment for your gun in open.

Looking for production not open im new to comp shooting and dont want to run with the big boys right away :)

Production.
You didn't say that before.
So you have to have a DA start. The CZ is about the best DA/SA.

The top shooters use the standard selective DA/SA and ease the hammer down to start. It is easier for your gunsmith to get a good trigger pull on them.
If you are not comfortable doing that, you need a decocker model.

Production is the lowest level right???
Sorry I should know more I am way under informed I am still researching. I was told that if the gun had a safety instead if a decocker you could start cocked and locked in sa with safety on

No, you can't do that.

I would again suggest that you go watch and see what folks are winning with.

Production for example is won more often than not with pistols that contain plastic.

To think Production is **not ** where the big dogs hang out is kinda wrong.

The competition at the top levels of each division is just as tough everywhere.

Easiest way to get you feet wet is Limited minor. Just load it up and shoot.

Yup.
You can get into production for less money than the other USPSA divisions, but the competition is still hot.
And DA/SA guns like CZ are not often seen in USPSA, plastic rules in America.
In IPSC, seldom shot by any but foreigners any more, the CZ is very popular because there is a first shot minimum trigger pull requirement. With DA/SA you only have to crunch it once, then tick; but a five pound Glock is forever.

Indeed. Here in OZ the year the CZ SP01 Shadow came out, IIRC there was 1 CZ & 8 Gocks in the top ten at the Nationals.
The next year there were 8 CZs.
Many had tried other DA/SA models, including Tanfoglio, Beretta & HK, they were all found wanting. The SA trigger on the CZ Shadow is, if not great, good enough out of the box and better than some low end 1911s.
My only beef with the SP01 Shadow is the railed dust cover - I don't like muzzle heavy guns. If the Australian importer brings in the 75 Shadow then I'll be first in line.
