Son attending college wants a bolt action, he's on a limited budget. We checked out the LGS; what we want is input from owners of the Stevens 200, caliber is not important, just what does and does not impress you for a gun in this pice range.

Thanks, Guy

in my opinion it is the best value in new firearms. To answer your specific questions:
Accuracy and quality of manufacture impressed me. Available aftermarket options impressed me. The finish on the metal is better than my remington 700, so after i got the 700 (2 years after the stevens) that now impresses me. The stock is NOT impressive, and now it wears a bell and carlson which has nothing to do with the stevens 200 but in case you are wondering it impresses me too. For a budget gun, the thing is impressive. It's what everyone always wants to borrow, and i have much more expensive guns. When those who borrow it find out what it really is, (underneath what I've done to it) they think I'm a liar. You don't HAVE to do anything to it for it to be a good gun, and quite useful/accurate, but that's just what I do to most of my guns.

I have 3 of them in 223, 243 and 308 and am happy with all for the price. The stock is the worst part of them. I think they are as accurate as any skinny barrel rifle and better than some that cost more money

I own some nice rifles but my Stevens 200 in 7mm-08 comes out of the safe often, dog ugly tack driving SOB, with a Nikon 3x9x50, dime groups, hog kills at 400 yards plus. stock is dog uugly, either gonna paint it or replace it, bought it for a truck gun, still is, but is special to me, I LOVE it. friends laugh at it till I outshoot their high dollar rifles. you will like it.

It's accurate, reliable, lightweight, and affordable. Now for the bad news...the trigger sucks. If you can adjust it yourself it will be fine but if not have a gunsmith do it. Took me 10 minutes on mine. You might also look into Howa/Hogue scoped combo. Where I am from they include everything you need to get started except ammo and a sling for 499 and are darn nice rifles too. Might post some pics tomorrow of the one I pieced together from a barreled action so look for it if you are interested.

The Stevens 200, Marlin XL-7, XS-7, as well as the Weatherby Vanguard are the best of the budget rifles. All are more than acceptable. The Weatherby is a little more expensive, but still a very good vaue. I think you get a better out of the box rifle with the Marlin. A few more aftermarket options with the Stevens.

I love my .270 Stevens, especially since I paid $189 for it new.

The method stormspotter linked to works well to lighten the trigger. Midway also sells a Timney trigger that fits if you want to spend some money.

I have a 223 and a 22-250 my sons both have one a 30-06 and a 300 win mag.We have had no trouble with them what so ever. For the price you can't go wrong.
