I was wondering if anyone shot or has the 308 win. model. For a cheap priced rifle I was wondering how is it? Are there any match barrels for it or stock mods etc? Any thoughts appreciated.

I have the 223 version and it is definitely a hunting accurate gun...with handloads I was able to get .5 groups...will do its part and them some. I have heard gripes from other guys about stock flexing?? My 223 doesn't torq that much to flex but try it for yourself and see...you could always throw it in a Bell and Carlson if you wanted.

the stocks are a little gooey, on a 223 , it won't show, on a 308? ....meh...maybe. for an extra 75 bucks get the Daddy, Savage with the accutrigger. better stock, and the trigger will blow you away.

other than that, yeah if I only had that money to spend, i'd get the Stevens, and not feel cheated. They got a 243, been kinda hankerin...

I was thinking it might be a good base for some mods. Everyone swears by the rem. 700, but right now 800$ is out of my budget + I'm not a remmy fan. If I got the Stevens I could throw on a nice scope and maybe stock and have a nice accurate gun for maybe 700$ in the longrun. Any stock companys I should look for? Thank you all for the replys!
I got one in .308 this year. The stock leaves something to be desires aesthetics wise but it is very accurate. I shot two deer with it this season. I did, however, add a good Pachmayr recoil pad, the one for the 110 synthetic stock fits perfectly. For about $250 it is a good buy.

The match barrel modification would be an easy one.
Look for barrel "take offs" from the Savage rifles on e-bay and associated sites.
Otherwise consider searching Midway's selection www.midwayusa.com
I own a Savage 10FP and consider it to be a great value. The stocks aren't a pleasure to behold nor are they wonderfully stiff however accuracy doesn't suffer as a result. Something I find entertaing about the Savage/Stevens line is that all the "shortcomings" of the line never seem to effect the accuracy which is still superior to the more costly options. I think that the Savage action will likely supplant the legendary Remington 700 just as the 700 did to the Winchester model 70. Just as in times before, the "traditionalists" didn't recognize the tide turning and those at the forefront paid less for thier guns than those who waited longer.

Stevens M200 in .308
I bought a Stevens M200 in .308 late last summer and topped it with a Weaver V10 scope. Went to the range and sighted it in and immediately got 1" groups from the bench. I was using Remington Express 150 gr. core-lokt pointed soft points. It's been consistent ever since and shoots like a dream. The only thing I don't like about it (I can easily live with the grey stock) is the trigger. It is heavy and a bit stiff. I assume that shooting it quite a bit would improve it but I'm not going to wait for that.
I got a couple after-market triggers (Rifle Basix) that come with instructions for removal of the old trigger and assembly of the new one in it's place. The Rifle Basix trigger is adjustable from 3# down to 1.5#. That will make it a smoother shooting rifle.
The other trigger is going on my other Stevens M200 in .243 (just bought) for the same reason. That will be topped with a Simmons Whitetail Classic scope. With these two rifles I'll be happy for many years to come. I can't wait to start reloading for both of them. I can't imagine the accuracy I'll get then.
