Hello all,

New to the forum (site et. al.) and I'm wondering about the Stevens model 237A 20 Ga. single shot bolt action.

From what little info I can find on it, it was made from 1930 to 1937. I don't know how accurate that is 'cause that came from Wikipedia. After a week of searching the internet, that is the only info I can find on that model. I couldn't even find a single image posted anywhere. I've been to most of the dedicated shooting and gun Websites and there is nothing that stands out unless there is some info burried in an archive somewhere...

There are numerous gun/ammo dealers and pawn shops within 20 miles of me, that will be my next adventure. Just gotta' save up some gas money and a whole day to look. (No I don't want use the phone... That ain't no fun...)

"Why" you ask, would I want one of these?
Because I'm kinda' goofy that way. I want what nobody else has. Even if it's somthin' that nobody else wants, it will have a place in my world.

And because I found one in Michigan. Though I wasn't looking for that, at that time. The old beastie was in excellent shape and felt right when I shouldered it. But because of the lame-brain-lazy-.... clerks on the other end of the instant background check phone number, I couldn't buy it before I went back home to Sacramento. (What does "Incomplete information" mean?) Since then, that gun has been growing on me. I just want to know why nobody talks about it. The one I found was located at "Guns Galore" in Fenton Michigan and they wanted $65.00, so I know that it ain't because it's some kind of super-rare-amazing-old-little-known shotgun.

I am new to this sport. In fact have only fired less than 20 rounds through three different vintage shotguns in five days. But because of, and thanks to the internet, I have learned lots in very short time. Your thoughts on this would be very much appreciated.

Sorry for the long winded post, but that just the way I am. BTW... just wait for the Next one titled: "Never too Old to Learn" coming soon to a gun forum near you...

Mikey

*bump for an old thread*

looking for info as well on this model (237a).

just inherited this piece from my grandfather and would like to learn more about it as he used it his whole life. any info is appreciated!!

I bought a 12 gauge single shot bolt action shotgun from Sears back in the 1960's. Don't know who actually made it, but it probably wan't the same gun you're talking about due to the age difference.

It was certainly an oddity since most of the old bolt action shotguns were 3 shot with a detachable magazine or 5 shot with a tube-type magazine. I didn't care for it since it was a big, clumsy beast so I swapped it for a break-open single shot. That gun was shorter and lighter, which made it a better fit for hunting the dense upland cover in these parts.

I also have a 20 gauge Mossberg 3 shot bolt action that my dad bought new back in the 1930's. It still works perfectly and I take it out and shoot it every once in a while but I've got newer guns that I prefer to use.

Collecting odd-ball guns is certainly an interesting take on things. If it appeals to you, more power to you.

well, it's not really my "thing" per say, but i'm interested in mine b/c it was my grandpa's and he used it for so many years.

Sorry, Widowman, didn't mean to imply anything about you. I was replying to the original poster and didn't realize he posted so long ago until after I had written.

My dad died 4 years ago and even though his old Mossberg bolt action has very littlle value on the resale market it's priceless to me and I will never sell it for any amount of money.

bud, no worries, i knew what ya meant ;)

and john, it looks similar in that it's an old gun, has a bolt action, and some other small stuff. but not really that similar when i'm looking at all the little details. thanks for the info too!
