Steyr M40 vs. Sig P229?

Is the Steyr M40 worth getting instead of a P229?

  • Yes, but only because the Steyr is cheaper.

  • No, the P229 is a better deal even though it's used and $100 more.

  • It might be worth it, but only if you get to shoot the Steyr before you make your decision.

  • The fact that you like the P229 already makes this a very easy decision; get the Sig.

as some of you know, i was planning on getting a police trade in Sig P229 .40 S&W from CDNN in a couple weeks. as i was looking through the catalog again, i saw taht the M40's are going for $300 new. i have heard good things about the Steyr, but i've never fired or even held one. i like the Sig's very much, but i am open to new gun experiences. do the M40's stand up well against the P229? i'm quite accurate with the Sig's, and i've never had one jam on me that wasn't horridly dirty (usually loaner guns from ranges that haven't been cleaned in who knows how many rounds). thanks!

The Steyr is a good gun. It is basically a better Glock. Now that being said no matter how much polish you put on a Ford Truck it still won't be a Porsche :D Go with the SIG.

Take my advice for what it is worth, as I am one of the boards SIG NUTS.

I have shot the Steyr and really like the sights and feel. Not sure how I feel about the safety but I lean towards liking it, I think.

The sights are a love/hate on the Steyr. Personally, I love them. I can't line up the SIG sights for didly. Makes it easy for me. At the local gun store they have a few used Steyrs for the same price they're listed for new in CDNN, so they've already depreciated about as much as they can. So if you buy either one you shouldn't be out much money if you decide you don't like it.

I carry the 229 in .40 and also have the .357 sig barrel.
Something to think about, the Styer is a one round gun, the Sig is convertable.

I too am a Sig nut, so I'll allways vote for the home team.

I own two Steyrs (M40 & S40) but I must admit cslinger has a point.

If you're plainning on CCWing with either one, go for the Steyr ... if you want just a range gun go with the Sig.

Better yet, snag the Steyr now while they are still available this cheap and then pick up the Sig down the road ... more guns is ALWAYS better :D

Thing is, these deals on the Steyrs are probably going to dry up sometime in the next year however there should be good police trade in deals on the Sigs for some time to come so that might play into your decision.

Your comparing apples to mangos.

The Steyr and the Sig are too different to compare.

We all know that the Sig is well made-I and some others know that the Styres are well made also, but again they are different guns,

I have carried both guns (the Sig was a P239) and I found that the M40 was more comfortable to carry.

The Steyrs have a very nice DAO trigger and the Sigs have nice DA/SA tiggers, so you have to figure out which action do you like better. Don't compare the Steyr trigger to a Glock-they're not the same.

I carry the 229 in .40 and also have the .357 sig barrel.

You can convert the Steyr if you wanted to.

I'd have to agree with Zundfolge.

I agree with FlashPoint

I own a Steyr S40, S9 and a Sig P228. I orginally bought the Steyr S40 and the Sig P228 because they are so different. I was new to handguns and was looking for a point of comparison.

The Steyr has a low bore axis an has very little precieved recoil. It is very accurate and is a wonderful example of a Ploymer gun. It ia a very smooth consistant assisted DA trigger. No Glock creep here. Sights do take some getting used to but once you do the gun points faster than anything else I own. It really is an improved Glock design.

The P229 Sig is a classic. Almost identical to the P228 except it is a little heavier and has a milled slide and is a little wider in the slide to accomodate the 40S&W. It has a classic DA/SA trigger. It is a tack driver in any caliber. As my wife says it looks and feel like a gun. The only downside to the Sig is it is heavy for all day carry.

All that being said I think that you cannot go wrong with either one. Both can be converted to .357 Sig. RTFM is incorrect when he says the Steyr is a one round gun. The Steyr is a lighter more carry friendly gun. If it were me I would by the M40 because they are a steal at $300 and will not be around for long. The newer version is out. The Sig trade ins should be around for a bit longer. Just my 2 cents.

the M40 is looking more and more like a great deal at $300, especially since the 12 round magazines are so inexpensive. there is a gunshow in my area in a couple weeks. i think i'll go and see if i can handle the steyr before i make my decision. the low bore axis and light weight certainly make the gun seem like a good one for CCW.
