I currently own a Glcok 26 that I bought for summer carry but that I rarely ever carry since I moved to 1911s. I saw a Sig P229 at my local shop that was very affordable. I was thinking about trading in the Glock for the Sig.

Basically I would like a 9mm for range time and to help train/take new shooters to the range with. Plus I like to change out the guns in the safe that haven't seen any range time after a certian amount of time to try something new.

So I figured I would throw up a poll to see what everybody out there thinks of Glock vs Sig for the purpose of a new shooter training tool and 9mm range toy.

I'd go with the Sig. It's a bit more robust and exhibits less muzzle flip than the Glock. It'll fit a wider variety of hands too.

The Glock26 (while still an excellent weapon) is just too small and light to properly teach a n00b with IMO.

:D

Ditto. I own a Glock 26 (subcompact) and 23 (compact) and find myself shooting the 23 a lot more at the range. That extra half inch under your pinkie makes it a lot more comfortable to shoot. The extra size also helps w/ recoil. For range use and teaching I would go with the larger SIG hands down (and I love my Glocks).

If the Glock in question was a compact or full sized then I would say keep it because (in my experiences) Sigs have too many controls for absolute beginners and slow people. It takes them a little bit to understand what everything does and the condition of the hammer. Being a baby Glock I think the 229 would be a much better choice, it would simply be easier to shoot well.

What caliber did you have in mind for the 229?

G'day Smiley, and et al.,

For what it is worth, I'll throw in my $0.02 in. I chose the G26 over quite a few other patterns. Why? The G26 won out in the areas of price, and serviceability. The price was quite a bit lower than that of the SIG 229. It was easier to maintain both in field stripping and detailed maintenance. Yes, I had to do some home work in this area. Both SIG and the G26 field strip easily. However, there are quite a few more parts and pieces to deal with on the SIG when you perform a detailed cleaning.

This was important to me as I shoot a couple of matches each month along with as much range time as my schedule and budget will allow. This works out to an easy estimate of 300 rounds per month. Been doing this for several years now.

The G26 can be completely taken down in about two minutes. Roughly the same time for reassembly.

This information was just provided to let you know why my choice went to the G26. Both are fine pistols. Figure out what you really want to use it for and try some range time with each. Sure fun shopping! Of course you could always buy them both! Best of luck in your acquisition efforts. Cheers!

Well, my Dad's G26 is a 9mm and my Sig 229 is a 357 sig / 40 S&W. So I can't give you a direct comparison. However I love my 229. I like my Dad's G26 too but If I wanted a Glock and I was not going to carry it CCW then I would get a bigger one. The G26 is a bit small for range work.

So if you carry 1911's for CCW then grab the Sig. Its a great weapon and will not let you down. Plus you can buy different barrels and mags for it and have 3 different calibers!! :)

-be well

I voted for the Sig P229 -- however, if you're looking at going with 9mm, as you say in your post, I'd suggest you look at the P228 instead. The 228 and 229 are essentially the same gun, but the 229 has a beefed-up slide to handle the higher pressures of the .40 and .357Sig...you *can* get it in 9mm (or get a 9mm conversion barrel), but it'll still have that heavier slide. The P228, on the other hand, is 9mm only and, as such, has a slightly lighter slide w/ a presumed better balance in the hand.
