Stolen gun a sick feeling and a message for those who keep guns in their car

A criminal will always be a criminal. It doesn't matter much that it's your gun, as it would be someone else's.

I understand your sick feeling. I had a magazine stolen once, lucky gun not in car as I always took it out with me. In the end, it's a gun, and bullets. You can get them many ways, and if someone is going to do something bad with it, it is not due to you, it's due to them.

Well that just stinks - sounds like a nice gun. Chalk it up to lesson learned, fairly cheaply on the whole. I have 2 handguns in the pickup always, but they're in a locked safe bolted to the floorboard.

Oh,no! A Rock! I LOVE my RIA GI .45,and I feel your pain...

KDA- you posted as I was typing....

If not, we should be comfortable leaving firearms just about anywhere.... it's not my fault someone took my gun from that table over there... it's the criminal who took it's fault.... this could go on with money and everything else.... clearly there is a line where you become somewhat responsible... though we may differ on that line....

I think the author here understands this philosophy, and that's why he feels guilty... and should somewhat.... but I agree, he shouldn't beat himself up about this (and neither should we), just cure the problem.... lock that rascal!!....

I doubt we disagree on personal responsibility for securing one's possessions as much as you suspect.

I was just trying to introduce some "balance" into the discussion which I felt that up to the time I posted was going way to much for "it is all our own fault". And geeze, the fellow did have his weapon locked in a metal container ... his truck. Now we are talking about mounting another metal container, a safe, inside his truck? Com'on, what's next? I suppose we could then park the truck only in a concrete bunker .... and add armed guards all around 24/7 and then more guards to watch the other guards in case one of them is corrupt or can be bought off. Guards watching guards ... sort of reminds me of the Berlin Wall. Didn't work there either.

If we ever learn to deal harshly and effectively with the criminal element, then, at least, there would be one heck of a lot less of them around to worry about. Just a thought but when it comes to scum, less is better.

Either way, this is a great discussion. I know I'm learning.

Looks good (above link).

Perhaps you could take a step further and mount it somewhere less common?

Behind a panel?
Under the dash?

I thought one of the best things about it is that you attach the cable to your seat rail. Seems like that would be pretty difficult to get around in the normal amount of time someone would be leaving a gun in their car.

That said, concealed compartments are definitely an interesting idea. However, I would want to combine the two different strategies and find something very solid to attach one of those gun boxes to even if it was concealed.

Couple of things I noted in this thread-

The statement that the internal lock means the gun is USELESS is laughable, easily unlocked by the thief with the tiniest bit of inginuity, or a KEY, which are the same for many guns. Maybe the poster was being facetious, I hope;)

The store that has the WAL, assuming they also are a Mart has a corporate policy that legal concealed carry is OK. Is this store different? A local store here from the same chain posted. I called their corporate office and the sign came down, apparently the manager had overstepped his authority. Now if its the store with a WAL that is also Green I have no idea, its also possible the store that is a Mart has changed their policy, I hope not. It was a couple of years ago I got the sign removed.

TheElyrian..... I use one of these instead.... simply because it doesn't require a key.... sure, it can be defeated (anything can), but it would take some forethought or a fair amount of time.... neither of which is the common smash and grabbers M.O.

I think it is a reasonable precaution... but I must admit the poopypants, or even mounting it in an obscure location (still accessible with ease) might make it even better.... but I'm not driving around with what appears to everyone to be crapped in underwear in my car...

One other thing...I'm amazed at the people who have gun related stickers on their car..talk about screaming -ME! ME! break into ME! there MIGHT be guns in here!

I'm pretty sure you wouldn't blame a lady for getting raped if she was wearing a short skirt - you'd blame the rapist. So don't fall into that trap! As others have said, but maybe more bluntly - BLAME THE THIEF NOT YOURSELF! Some thief roaming a parking lot looking for something to steal with a slim jim is the guilty one here. So, do not take the responsibility for some scum bag's choices. That plays right into the victim mentality.

Where I go hunting we have to leave the truck by a trail and walk over a ridge. We allways purposely flod up the soft gun cases and leave on the seats and if they are hard cases we leave them open so that THEY don't try and break in looking for guns.

This happened to me. too. Neighbor punk took my CZ-75BD. Luckily, the police recovered it.

Happened to me back in 1989.. had a Taurus 66 stolen form my truck while it was parked outside my house. I was a LEO on top of that; at least it wasn't my agency-issued weapon stolen.
My revolver turned up about two years later after a car chase turned into a foot chase during which four thugs being pursued all threw guns as they ran. Mine was one of them, but it was not the one used in the drive-by shooting that precipitated the car chase. It had acquired, during its tour of the mean streets, some tiny nicks in the stocks, and some mild blueing wear about the muzzle.

I'm surprised anyone expects anything but a cheap metal box with a lock for that price... but it is still pretty good protection against smash and grab... I am rethinking some of the other options in this thread as well... a good prybar would defeat this thing in seconds... but most car smash and grabbers dont carry pry bars...

Sorry to hear about the theft. I've been there.

I live in the inner city. I will never leave any firearms in my car - ever.

You never leave anything of any value in a car. We have had two cars broken into. In my girlfriend's car, they broke a window and took the radar detector cord; we brought the detector in so they didn't get that. They broke into our Jeep, but the alarm scared them off.

If you HAVE to leave a handgun in the car, try using a bicycle U lock or a padlock and chain and lock it through the trigger guard to the seat rails or to something solid in the trunk like a trunk hinge. Also, get a car alarm.

The best advice is to never leave anything of any value in your unattended car.

That is a bummer. On the bright side the person who sold it probably has no idea what a ".38 super auto" is and wont be able to find ammo for it either.

I lost a gun and a lot of other valuable stuff from my pickup once. I reported the stuff stolen to the police and didn't bother with insurance. I figure it was just the way things go.

I've been telling people for years, "don't leave a gun in the car!"...only to have it shot down a few times.

I know what it's like to have a car broken into...happened twice to my old Audi. Fortunately I wasn't into firearms back then, otherwise it would have ended up on the street.

I am still searching for an Internet Web Site that will sell me some imitation "pre-soiled" poopy panties so I won't have to bother making my own.

I thought you were supposed to be able to by anything on the Internet.
If anyone has a URL ... :barf:

I remember sharing with some people that my firearm is locked in a secure safe inside the car and they thought I was crazy and going way too overboard.

It's a seriously lousy feeling and it's not like all the "shoulda, woulda, couldas" offered here aren't already going through your head. I've been there. I walked into my break in, in progress and chased the SOB for about a block (reached into the vehicle first where the gun was...not anymore) until my brain caught up over the adrenaline and said "hold on idiot, you're bringing a knife to a possible gun fight".
I left it in the vehicle that night (like I did countless times before) because I didn't have a "real" carry holster that could be worn comfortably and securely for long periods of time, even though I had a CHL. Went online and bought one that night at 3am after I got home. I felt awful for a long time and hope it wasn't used for bad things except maybe for a self inflicted AD/ND by the new owner.
I wonder what percentage of folks have to learn the hard way before finally taking the advice we'd heard dozens of times before, and not just buying a car safe but using it every time.
