I started typing this around 8am today, it is now after 4pm and I am finishing it up. Chain of Events.

We recieved a bonus at work last Thursday and was talking with a co-worker about what we were going to spend it on. He was going to just bank his and I was torn between a Gun Safe/RSC or a new gun purchase. My Co-worker said get the Safe/RSC, I had pretty much made up my mind and was even looking on the internet at them. Then again I sure was wanting an AK or another Handgun. Anyway Fast Forward to Monday the 13th (yesterday). I get home at 5pm to find my front door kicked in. As I was dailing the police I walked through clearing each room. I get to the master bedroom and it was a mess. I knew there was a problem. As I entered the room the closet door was open and things were a mess.. Sure, I had 8 long guns in cases stacked in the corner of the closet. GONE. I had a small residental safe (like you get at Walmart) about 3' tall. It contained 5 handguns, some jewlery and a small coin collection that I have been working on for 25 years. 3 of the long guns were inherited from my father and grandfather. They took the whole safe. Of course it wasn't bolted down or anything. Also missing was my wifes jewlery box full of stuff. Luckly they did not look in the closet in the spare bedroom (more guns). It was obvious it was someone that had been in our house before. (our teenage children don't have the best of friends)

This morning while reading some of the posts here, I read some of you had guns in your closet, under the bed, in the drawer and such (just like me). It made me want to type this.... I just want to tell you that if you own a gun and plan on buying more, spend the money on a Gun Safe/RSC. NOW...

I received a call from a detective this morning around 10am and he said he had our stuff. I went down to the station and sure enough he had it all, including the beat open safe... After 3 hours of paper work and stuff I was able to leave with everything except 4 handguns. They were used in a Driveby Shooting late Monday night and I could not have them until balistics were done and they are cleared (shot up cars not people). They had received a tip while investigating the driveby shooting and raided an apartment at 4am this morning they found my items and others things. During the investigation at my house yesterday evening I furnished the police with detail list of guns missing including pictures. They were amazed and said most people don't have even the serial numbers recorded.

This afternoon I purchased a 28 gun Safe/RSC that will be delivered tomorrow. I have learned a valuable lesson and had my prayers answered and was able to get most and at some point all of my items returned.

So for those of you that have guns in your closet, under your bed and in the sock drawer, START SAVING FOR A SAFE/RSC AND BUY ONE. Don't be like me and procrastinate for years. I was lucky to get mine returned in such a short time you may not.

Thanks for reading my story. I hope It has opened some eyes.

Wow glad to hear you got most of your guns back! Your handguns in a driveby shooting? Damn!

Good advice, thanks for posting

Glad you got your guns back so quickly.

I appreciate the advice. I will move that item from the "someday" bottom of my list to the "next" position at the top. Thanks.

If you ask any safe salesman, they'll tell you that a significant portion of their sales comes from folks who've just been ripped off. That's the way it was for me in '95 when I had a bunch of handguns stolen, but obviously by professionals.

The only one ever recovered was a High Power used in a murder.

WOW!

My buddy just had three of his guns stolen yesterday. They took his deer rifle that he was going to use tomorrow. He had just put a Hasting on it and finished sighting it in that day!:cuss:

I had just finished surfing for "gun safes" when I decided to click on over to THR and WHAMMO, this post grabs my eye.:uhoh:

I think I'll go back and order one sooner than later. Thanks for the post.

you were lucky to get back all your stuff. Glad you did and the safe is a good idea

I am glad to hear you got your stuff back. I don't think it usually works out that way. Thanks for the post and I have been thinking I needed a safe for a long time.

I have decided that I will not buy another gun until I have a safe installed to put them all in. I have the safe vendors card taped to my computer with a model picked out. I think my Christmas bonus will be applied to a safe as well.

My guns are insured but I don't want them used in a crime, and I would be sick if someone stole the browning deer rifle I inherited from my Grandfather. In addition to the sentimental value, I have shot a deer with it every year for the last 10 years and it shoots sub 1 MOA groups.

Glad you got them back. so did you find out who stole them? was it random, or was it someone who knew you had guns? ie. friends of your kids?

Aside from having the safe, if it's not random burglary, you should also get your kids to tighten up their lips.

very VERY lucky

here in CA if your guns are used in a crime YOU can be charged for them.

also, good luck ever getting your guns back.

I should know. BTDT. Hate the T shirt.

Don't do it! Take that money for the safe and buy welding lessons! I just started and it's opening up all sorts of doors. Target stands, safes, tables, it's all easy-cheesy now. And the scrapyard has LOT'S to work with.

Darn Good Advice

Smash and Grab thieves are scattered around the entire country; NO area
is "safe". Keep all firearms out of the hands of criminals; lock'em up in a
RSC today; bolted too the floor and wall. Also, install security doors as
well as buy yourself a quality monitiored alarm system. This helps
to cut down on the amount of time thieves have. Plus, add a few "land
sharks" to your area; as there isn't anything better than a barking dog
to alarm your neighbors~! :D

Got any good safe plans? I know how to weld, got a good MIG welder and a garage to work in. I just cannot figure out the door locking mechanism or where to get the bolt bars or get them chrome plated.

Team up with a buddy or family member when you buy your RSC. Most places WILL give a quantity discount when you buy 2 or more. Saved me about 500 bucks.

Scott, the plan I've been thinking about is just a standard rectangular shape, with heavy-duty hinges welded on the inside pivot point, and a latch welded on the outside fastened with a strong padlock.

The latch is the weak point, but every safe has a weak-point, to be clear, the latch is welded flat onto the door, so it has no hinge. If you're cheap (me) and expect a safe to either deter or delay, then that's why I'm planning the design. Heck, they rate real safes on how many minutes they delay a safe cracker, so absolute security is not possible. I don't figure any schmuck stealing guns out of a basement will be a pro, and a 3/8" tempered steel hand-cut (wide) latch ought to discourage any burglar who didn't bring a plasma cutter:):fire:

Best gun safe I've seen, wish I had pictures of it, was a big model that had been embedded in a recess in a wall and then a bookshelf on sliding rails was mounted in front of it. (secret room type deal).

Stickjockey:

An RSC is a Residential Security Container. Most of us call these safes. A real safe is way out of most folks price range.

Champion, fort knox, liberty, etc., are RSCs, not safes.

I recently addressed this myself: the most recent project was a 3.5' x 3.5' x 2.5' wall-mounted enclosure that's got thick (1.5"?) plywood walls and 2 deadbolts to keep it closed. Plenty strong for me to climb into it (and I'm a big guy), hard to get through without an axe, and that'd take a while, and fairly cheap.

Gotta say I feel a lot better with a place to store my valuables. It's not perfect by any means, but I'm not worried about determined/dedicated thieves either -- just the opportunistic kind.

If anybody posting here has any specific questions regarding gun safes you have a wealth of information right here at your fingertips.

Both myself, and another forum member, CB900F, are in the safe business. If you do a search on the subject, you will find lots of information. If you have any questions that haven't been answered, one of us will usually chime in if you post it.

I myself, am a commercial locksmith that specializes in safes and vault doors. I not only sell them, but I also move them, repair them, and open them when they are locked.

I can't speak on behalf of CB900F, but I will always take care of fellow members of THR if I sell something they are interested in.

I do own a safe, however, that is used to store my coin collection and important documents. It's way too small to hold either of my rifles, though. It's plenty to store a few handguns, though, but I don't own any of those. (Yet) And really, I only have a Yugo M59/66 SKS and a Ruger 10/22 carbine with a scope. They probably total, at best, $400. And I have $1000 in firearms insurance just for being a member of the NRA.

Don't really need a safe or RSC or whatever.
