I've been thinking about starting a project gun and was wondering what is the strongest/ thickest chambered 12 gauge.

Only requirement is that it is a 3.5 chamber or can be reamed without weaking things.

Needs to be a rifled barrel.

That's it everything else is on the table so which one is the strongest single shot out there? If it could eat double charges all day long that would be prefect but that may asking to much.

Not a single shot, but my LGS has one of the Ithaca 37 Deer Slayer III that has the thickest, heaviest slug barrel I've ever seen on a shotgun. This thing is just plain nuts, like to the point where I've looked at it and wondered who would actually buy it.

If not a good place to start, it might be something at least worth looking into.

Thanks for the info. That's what I'm looking for something crazy over built that makes you think why.... But it does need to be a single shot.

The only 12ga single I know of with rifled barrel is the H&R Ultra Slug.
Whether it is overbuilt enough for your project, I cannot tell, but they DO sell rifles on that action.

You probably could get all the info you want, and a whole lot more!, reading through Ed Hubel's "12 ga. Rifle From Hell" thread:

I know he's reviewed several of the stouter rifled shotguns throughout his project. Lots and LOTS of information. He's been at it since 2006, and there's almost 900 posts to read through!

Get an ultra slug, have the rifling reamed out, fit in invector plus tubes and you have it. Someone was taking the 20 ga version and going to 3 1/2" for a special load made for Hastings by Lightfield, so it can be done.

^^ I believe the H&R Ultra is a 12 bored from a 10ga blank. It IS a super heavy walled barrel.

This is correct. I have the 10 gauge smooth bore version, heavier frame than standard H&Rs. Even in 10 gauge, the gun weighs 9.0 lbs.

I THINK this is it.....

Model Ultra Slug Hunter
Gauge 12 Gauge with scope (SBS-980)
12 Gauge (SB2-980) Order Online From Gallery of Guns
20 Gauge (SB1-920) Order Online From Gallery of Guns
Stock Walnut stained American hardwood Monte Carlo pistol grip stock, sling swivels, nylon sling, ventilated recoil pad.
Barrel 24" heavy rifled barrel
Chamber Up to 3"
Sights Drilled and tapped for scope mount rail; SBS-980 comes with 3-9x32 scope, factory-mounted and bore-sighted.
Length 40"
Length of Pull 14-1/4"
Drop at Comb 1-1/4"
Drop at Heel 1-1/8"
Weight 8-9 lbs.

I note that it is a 3" chamber. It IS a slug gun, after all. If you're wanting to build a 10 gauge, just buy the 10, why build it?

Hers's my 10 gauge turkey....
