Hi all. I am a senior at the University of Texas at Austin. 23 years old. Have had my CHL for 2 years now. I haven't always been pro-carry, but ever since I've been enlightened, it's always bothered me that licensed professors, faculty, and students can't protect themselves while on campus, a place where many of us spend a great deal of time at.

Well recently I heard about the SCCC (students for concealed carry on campus) campaign and learned that my school actually has a chapter helping the cause. Futhermore, our student government council is actually holding a meeting because they want to make it official university policy to be a gun-free zone regardless of whether congress lets us carry. My school's chapter intends on being heard at the next student government meeting before they vote on this issue.

Unfortunately, I discoverd that most of the guys working on this are pretty young and do not have their CHLs. Not to dog on the younger guys who are putting in so much effort and doing a phenomenal job(afterall, age is just a number), but it would definitely help if a student who actually IS licensed to carry spoke to the SG commitee. This is important because the voters will be asking why this affects us NOW. This is why I have volunteered myself to plead our case.

As far as I know, I will be the only STUDENT who actually has a permit who will appear. HERE IS WHERE YOU CAN HELP. If you are a student or a professor or faculty member at UT, please come too! We need to show them that licensed carriers are just like them. We are normal everyday folks, not some gun-totin' cowboys out to shower our campus with lead. You would not have to do much, just show up and introduce yourself, your affiliation with our school, and that you carry. This will really change the mood in the room and make them keep a more open mind when deliberating.

IF YOU HAVE FAMILY OR FRIENDS affiliated with our school (or any school), or if you are LEO or know LEOs who could spare some time and come show your/their support, it will definitely make a difference.

The meeting is this Tuesday, the 27th of January. Please make every effort possible to get in touch with anyone you think will help with their presence. We are fighting a losing battle against some ignorant, young policy makers and this is our last chance before they make up their minds.

Thank you for your time. Spread the word!

Jonathan

I'd like to find out more details too. I'm a grad student, but it's hard for me to get onto campus on short notice.

Wish I could make it up there for this, I'm stuck in San Marcos in class 'til late on Tuesdays.

What time is this thing, exactly?

I like your organization; I am familiar with it. Best of luck, go for it; don't let the idiots intimidate you.

The meeting is at 7pm. I can't make it. Do a search on the utexas home page for the location. I can't cut and paste now, I'm on my iPhone. They can't make their own rules for UT, it's a state school. If there's state preemption, they can't do anything about it. I'll post more on this topic tonight. You can already carry everywhere on campus sans buildings as per Texas state law. If the area is not a building, it is a thoroughfaire (sp?). Adding carry into buildings is not a huge stretch.

The meeting is pertaining to the position the student government will take regarding CCC, not a vote to allow CCC. It has been speculated that a bill regarding CCC will be introduced this legislative session and the student government will take a side for or against it. Although their position on the issue may not matter much if they are against it, if we could get them to support us it would go a long ways. This has no effect on university or state policy, just the position the SG will take on the matter. I will be there and I'm a student with a CHL.

I have prior plans tonight, but good luck. My wife coaches at the UT pool and is usually leaving at about 10 p.m. Thankfully it is well lit and there are lots of people leaving at that time, but I'd still prefer if people could carry on campus.
