We really need an official "How do you pronounce ____________?" thread, but I'll just keep this one going.
I was listening to a local radio news spot and the reporter described a weapon that was found in the vehicle of a criminal. A carbine. His pronunciation of the word prompted this post.
So, how do you pronounce carbine?
Does it rhyme with nine or bean?

I say FAL, rhymes with "pal".

Certainly that's how the C1A1 was always referred to in the Canadian military.I used to call them FN.
That's true enough. However, no one says "see-uh", they say "see-eye-eh".FAL is an acronym, so spelling it out is an option, but why? No one says "en ey ess ey", they say "NASA".
Mike, you are free to call the rifle whatever you want. But be aware that more knowledgeable people will laugh at you behind your back.I say FAL, rhymes with "pal".
Also correct.I generally refer to it as an R1 anyway.
It's also easier and faster to say "Gee Bee Two" than "Winchester Model 70"; but that doesn't mean the former is a correct expression for the latter.Personally it is easier and faster to say "fal" than "Eff Aye Al".
Yes I will, but only because I've now had the benefit of reading this thread!Besides if you are sitting at the range shooting one and someone comes up and asks to see your "fal" you are gonna know what they are talking about, aren't you?
"let me see that dipmus (DPMS) AR-15...."

It is not pronounced that way by all French-speakers.in French, you say FAL as a word, you don't say each letters.
Not necessarily! As Winson Churchill said, "It is the inalienable right of every Englishman to pronounce foreign words exactly as he pleases".as the FN FAL is a belgian acronym (french language) you should call it that way.
