I have heard so much of these things, I decided to feel one out...I loved it. I am considering getting 2 or 3 at this price BUT...I need to know a couple of things.

1.) How available are holsters for this thing?

2.) How available are mags for it?

3.) The subcompact styer, does your pinky finger hang off the bottom?

4.) How reliable is yours?

5.) Are they current production? Why the price drop?

there are several holsters available, try looking at 'high noon'.

magazines are available, think they're running around $30 from the importer, but cdnn may have them for cheaper.

dunno about the subcompact steyr, didnt have one.

my m9 was 100% reliable, the m40 was picky about ammo. it liked all the JHP's i fed it, but fmj was a bit trickier. it liked lighter loads, 155 grs i think, or was it 160? i forget.

the steyr pistols are still in production, but when steyr failed to renew their contract with their past importer a few years back, CDNN bought their entire stock of steyr pistols.
these pistols were put in the market at a greatly discounted price, but that doesnt mean lower quality. once this supply is gone, and new production models are the only NIB ones available, the price will be up over $500.

i kick myself just about every day for selling my steyr pistols, buying a case of 9mm for $100 sure beats paying twice that for a case of .45acp......

edit - do a search in the 'tools & technology' section for anything related to 'steyr', lots of threads and input from steyr enthusiasts.

holsters are readily available from a variety of manufacturers such as highnoon and glaco for the M series.

S series are harder to get leather for.

Mags are 9.99 from CDNN...not sure how many they have.

i have small hands and can get all fingers on the S

My m9 and my brothers m40 are 1000% reliable with everything.

The M was redesigned, but has not started selling yet...So the old style M's are very cheap....that mixed with their relative un-popularity, partially due to zero marketing have all contributed to a low price. Quality is IMHO better then the XD or glock...Awesome values for the money. Would still be a value at 500 USD.

I only have the M40, so I'm not sure about the compacts:

1) Holsters are available - Several makers offer a variety of quality stuff that will fit. I have a High Noon Sky High that has been great.

2) To the best of my knowledge mags are not very available. CDNN and a few other places had them, but I've heard they are in short supply. Hopefully the same mags will fit the new models and will not be discontinued. There seem to be a lot of cheap LEO hi-caps with no takers, maybe they'll be available come September.

3) The S is probably a pinky dangler. It's been a long time since I handled one, so I can't really remember.

4) 100% reliable. I've put every major brand FMJ and several different kinds of JHPs through it from 155 gr. to 180 gr. with 0 problems.

5) They are no longer in production. There is a new, similar model with a frame redesigned to have standard rail and different grip shape.

I paid around $330-340 for mine new a little over 2 years ago, which was $200 cheaper than some local dealers were selling them (and may be still). Why were some places able to sell them so cheap already 2 yrs ago? I'm not sure. I don't know if they bought out a big contract or if it was because Steyr was in the process of being sold and dropping the U.S. distributor (G.S.I.) at that time. There's bound to be someone around here who knows something about this.

Here is the newer one -- the M40A1 that should be hitting shelves pretty soon. Great guns, and an amazing steal for what they are going for right now. They'd still be a great gun at $500+.

Buy now or forever hold your peace... :uhoh:

M series discontinued MA1 is replacing it. rail adapter coming for original M series.

S series a pinky dangler? how huge are your hands? I have kel-tec p11 and my pinky dangles from it though I put a magazine floorplate on it to cure that while none availible for steyr I believe the steyr is long enough not to be a dangler for most.

magazines are $19.99 at cdnninvestment unless your a LEO or Military. $9.99 then :cuss: :fire:.

full caps are 12 for 40/357 and 14 for 9mm. sigma's can be modified to work though good luck finding them and they are upwards of $70 now unless used $50 lowest I have seen.

price drop was explained good.

initially I had slide stop short of battery and brand spanking new magazine caused jams for first 100 rounds after working in it goes away. after 300-500 should go away. may take longer with 9mm version unless you use +p or +p+ ammo.

S series and MA1 still being manufactured and steyr has not shop setup in US they are working it themselves should be better than previous attempts. time will tell.

I think mrapathy2000 may be more on target about the S grip pinky fit. It is probably not a problem for most. Since I find my CZ97B's grip to feel just right and never thought about its DA pull or safety placement as being out of reach (until others mentioned it), I guess I must have big hands. The M series grip seems a bit on the small side to me, but I know others who think it's perfect. I can say that, other than the grip getting a little shifty in my sweaty hand on a hot day, I really like the Steyrs and wouldn't hesitate to pick up another (maybe an S9) if I had the spare cash.

My M40 has been problem free from day 1. I absolutely love it! I wouldn't know about holsters for it, since I wouldn't carry it, that honour goes to the G-29.

Jeremy

I highly recommend them. I am getting ready to buy an M9 to complement my M40.

Can't beat the price!

Others have pointed out who makes holsters, the S series will fit in most M series holsters as the controls and such are in the same place on both guns (the S just has a shorter slide and shorter grip.

As for pinky danglin' on the S. I'm pretty much average in size and my pinky doesn't dangle, in fact it hits flush with the bottom of the magazine. The distance from the bottom of the trigger guard to the bottom of the magazine is approx 2 3/8" if that tells you anything.

love my steyr s40

i love love love my steyr. what really did it for me is the wt. and size i have about average hands and its a perfect fit .you do need to give it a breaking in period of about 300 - 500 rds but after that its a dream.

I own a S40 and have fairly large hands. My pinky does not dangle at all. It is firmly on the grip. As far as the leather goes the S40 will use the same leather as the M series. Both of my Steyr .40s have been 100% reliabe with no problems at all.

I have an S40. no pinky problems, and as I keep saying, FIST makes holsters for the S series, it's true that M series holsters work fine, but FIST does make them just that little bit shorter if you want.

Got two

I have one M-40 which is 100% reliable and I have one S-40 which is really bad and effectively is a single shot (jams every time it is fired). I cannot see any mechanical defect and have tried different types of ammo and have had several people shoot it with same result. I am just about to send it back to the Warrantor out in Iowa. :banghead:
