Hi All,
Just got my brand new Winchester/Miroku 1886 and want to roll some ammo for it. Obviously, there are no large rifle primers available, but I have a bunch of CCI #34’s.

In putting together some easy-shooting Trapdoor power loads, can I safely use the #34’s?

Thanks in advance,
Tom

If things keep going the way they are, I’ll probably be doing the same thing.

What powder will you be using?

I swap components all the time! and yeah, start small and work up to primer flattering

The CCI #34 primers are just match grade LRP. It seems like a waste on the 45-70 but if that's all you have, have at it.

Where are the photos of your new Winchester?

Installed the Skinner peep sight today. I think it looks pretty good, and I know it works with my eyesight. D885D3D4-A3A0-45FD-9170-AF949C371AFA.jpeg

I was reading this thread and a question popped into my head - I will ask for those who know. I am rich in LPP and somewhat poor in LRP - can a LPP be substituted for a LRP in (say) a 45-70 load - I am asking because I simply do not know. Thanks for any input.

I thought replying only if you use pistol powder to pull your leg but it should be fine. The flame front may be smaller so you will have to test for proper ignition. Cold outside will make things more problematic.

I started a thread on another forum I frequent, a bunch of guys who shoot big bore single-shots and such. Many of them use LPP's with reduced loads... and typically with pistol powders like Unique, TrailBoss, 2400... even RedDot, and others. Some say they get better SD's with pistol primers. I don't know how well it would work trying to light a full charge of something like IMR4064, for example, but I don't see why it wouldn't work.

I'm too busy looking at that case coloring... I really, reallllllly want to have my Browning 71 case colored some day...

Let us know how that sight works in real life. The idea is clever, but I wonder about that much eye relief using a peep sight.

It actually provides a very nice sight picture to my eye. I have the same setup on my Henry .22 Golden Boy, and it’s a very accurate system. But then, I have to wear readers to see anything close up, so maybe the distance helps...
Best,
TR
