Substitution

Sometimes I have trouble locating the bullets that are recommended in the loading manuals (e.g. Lyman 49th)

So, my question is can I substitute something else and still use the same table data

Example
For 200gr .45ACP load my Lyman book suggests Speer Gold Dot HP #4478. Can I substitute a similar 200gr .45ACP JHP from another mfgr, such as Hornady XTP Bullets 45 Caliber (451 Diameter) 200 Grain Jacketed Hollow Point

Yes, but if loading to maximum , reduce the powder charge and work up as always. Different component=Different pressure.

If they are of similar construction and bearing length, yes. As posted, back off and work back up.

is the same as 230gr RN (not LRN)

Moreisless - I would expect the HP to be a longer round due to the cavity. The seating depth would be at issue in this case. Powder charges should be ok.. but like everyone said above... Load light and work up.

Normally the oal will need to change--longer for the FMJ, so it would be less pressure with the same JHP load.

In shotshells you can not substitute components. With rifle ammo components are a lot less sensitive and with handgun ammo it's almost not important to a point. Primers of the same type (small pistol for small pistol) matter very little as do bullet manufacturers. As long as the bullets are of the same type (jacketed for jacketed and lead for lead) and of the same profile and weight you should be fine with a little adjustment of OAL. Most of this has been said above but I said it again in agreement with the others.
