Suckers that waste their money on non-gun stuff...

I have no problem with people spending as they see fit - my wife likes the Coach crap and even worse, diamonds! :scrutiny:

Plus I make knives so no, I don't believe every purchase should be gun related. If you have a custom gun you should at least get a custom knife! :D

A good knife can save your life.

A custom knife is a work of art.

A good custom knife is a family heirloom.

A great custom knife is a family heirloom that gets passed down rather quickly because it was at home in the display case when the going got ugly.

A good knife can save your life.

;)

(yeah, I'm silly)

I figure it this way: a $175 S&W Model 10 bought at a pawnshop today can be sold for at least $175 tomorrow, next week, and next year

I feel the same way,

I don't get to the range enough, and when I do, I usually burn up .22 ammo.

my girl likes coach bags, diamonds and gold, designer shoes and things that glitter and shine.

I've tried to explain to her that when I buy a gun, if things ever get hard up (god forbid the get that bad) I can always sell it off for at least what I paid for it (perhapse I won't be able to recover the money I have into accessories, but I guarantee that percentage wise, I can recover more selling my gun than she can with a purse.

that and if her designer shoes outlast my rifle, I will cut it up into little tiney pieces and eat it, regardless of the digestive consequences.

one of the things that I don't understand are the people with the 60-80k brand new cars, they loose such a rediculous percentage to interest on the loanand depreciation on the vehicle, they could go out and buy a full armoury of fun toys. and a fully restored classic.

I would never tell a person how to spend his money, unless asked, but I can still say that s/he is a fool for spending money on pointless, trivial, purely fashionable objects that retain very little value and, in fact, will likely be worthless in resale value.

I can see a person buying anything that interests them.

What I can't see is people throwing a good percentage of their paycheck in the toilet every month in finance charges.
Most people don't even have a clue what they are actually paying for their new SUV or stuff they bought with their credit card, etc.

right now I am saving ten percent of my income, the rest leftover after things I actually need goes downrange or twoards other fun stuff

I have a pair of Red Wing electricians boots with fiberglas anywhere steel would normally be in a steel toe & shank work boot and I believe they cost me about $200 with tax and toe protectors and extra laces & insoles... but I hit a live 277AC line in a machine once while wearing them and did not get zapped and that made those boots worth their weight on Gold.

When I go to the junkyard and see what gets tossed into the scrap pile it is amazing.. bikes, cycles, mowers, furniture, store fixtures, computers, toys, appliances etc etc all designed to wear out and be obsolete quickly and disposable. Kinda sickens you when you realize what we throw away and piss money away on here in USA compared to what they have other parts of the world.

"Kinda sickens you when you realize what we throw away and piss money away on here in USA compared to what they have other parts of the world."

Yeah like my Grandmother would tell me when I was young, "Eat your peas, don't you know they are starving in China".

I always wanted to say, "Well they can have these peas", but it would have gotten me knocked off the chair.:D

Man, that makes me glad to have the girlfriend I have. I asked her once what she thought when a friend of hers spent $150 on a purse. She said "well, I'll get one next week, when they're on the clearance rack for $30."

She wasn't kidding. She also found me a pair of $50 boots for $20 while she was at it.

We're really too poor to spend a lot of money on fashion for her or guns for me. I have a grand total of $300 in firearms, which ends up being one pistol, one shotgun, and one rifle.

I don't really think of money in terms of how many guns it would buy. I'm poor enough that I'm beginning to think about how how long I could eat if I sold my rifle. Maybe I could get a little more tuition if I sold my paintball gun. Bet I could buy all my school supplies if I sold my video game system. I could buy all my books for a semester if I just sold all of my guns.

Then I remember that if I bust my ass on my two jobs hard enough, I don't have to give up any of the things I enjoy. And that's not a problem at all.

I am nowhere near omnipotent enough to know how anyone else should spend their money. It would never even occure to me to say "You shouldn't have bought that, you should have gotten this."

My two vices are guns and guitars, both of which appreciate in value. Not as much as we'd like to think however. I don't buy either for investments, but to use.

Do you think of everything in terms of resale value? I have several guns that have held their value and a few that have gone up in value, but they are ones that I enjoy and do not want to sell. If I am unwilling to sell them, it really doesn't matter if they have gone up or down in value.

I honestly don't care what people spend their money on. I only question them if they are spending money that they don't have and have no guarantee of being able to repay. Otherwise, it is their money. I may think it is silly to buy things like a jet ski or a snowmobile, but I am sure there are many out there that think it is silly that I own more than a few firearms and plenty that I don't "need."

"Would you care to elaborate on what pistol, shotgun, and rifle only cost $300 for all three?"

Well sure, but its not that elaborate. One phoenix arms HP22 ($99), one Stoeger 20ga break action($89) and my most expensive gun, my 91/30 ($109).

I do not criticize people who spend money on quality, but i do get pissed off when people spend big money on junk, although i usually try to bite my tongue.

I have paid 220 for a pair of boots (Danners) , and 160 twice on shoes, (Allen Edmonds) All three have lasted over ten years, and the A-E's can get rebuilt for about 30 bucks.

I buy Klein and Snap-on (used if i can find them) tools and always try to buy the best, I never ever remember saying "Geee, I should have bought the cheap tool. "

I often help people out from my church and others, and I am amazed at how incompetent people are at basics. Changing a light fixture, rebuilding a faucet or changing a doorknob. Take two minutes to go online now and read a nice easy How to article.

If my wife wants to buy a new purse that is fine, it better be something decent cuz we both hate junk.

My issues are with people who buy disposable crap, pay high dollar for it and then dont care when it lasts a month.

i don't use those terms, but my paternal grandfather used this example all the time...he would calculate the work hours it would take him to earn the said item. thus, i bought a $xxx handgun. he would tell me, wow, that's going to be xxx hours of work for me to be able to afford that...

I'd rather keep some of my tax money and put it into guns....in exchange I'll drive on lumpy roads, get mail 3 days a week, and teach my own kids.

I do all that and still don't get a break on my taxes.

And I must be even luckier than I thought, all you guys with women who like Coach handbags and diamonds are breaking my heart. My wife likes guns and classic muscle cars. :D

No, she doesn't have a sister.

I have friends who've spent literally thousands on computers and video games.Friends who've spent thousands on home theaters.I myself and several people I know have dropped obscene amounts into old cars or bikes. It's just whatever you're into.Capitalism and free market all the way,and God bless America I say.

Anyway my wife and I have a budgeted amount of spending money each week,so she can basically buy whatever she likes,as long as she and I stick to the budget. My stuff:

So I am to believe that no one in this thread except me has spent $200+ on a nice comfortable pair of boots?
Well kind of,I got some some $200 boots on clearance for 75 bucks once.Darn nice boots,I might add.

Elitists sometimes scoff at my budget-minded decision to buy a Taurus pistol and revolver. They didn't offer to donate change for a Glock or 1911 so to hell with them
.
Right on dude,that's hilarious!

When I use to trade in penny stocks I would equate items bought with how
much stock I could have bought.....

.....I still never regretted buying a firearm.

I have sold or not bought many things, skipped the movies or going out to eat,
and even worked large amounts of OT or picked up a second job  so I
would have the money to buy the firearm of my choice.

I have never sold a firearm to to go to the movies, take a date out to eat,
buy a round of drinks, or some new duds. Thats all temporary stuff. I have
boots that are 12 years old and I expect another 12 years out of them, my
duster is about 10 and still keeps me dry and my truck is a 98 (the 87 died on
me and the 77, well... thats a long story). No "need" for "new" stuff.
edit: Firearms are not stuff.

I expect things to last and really do not understand why people buy items
that have such a short life to them or always have to get the newest flavor.
Heck my laptop is 7 or 8 years old. My old Startack phone lasted around 6
years before it gave up the ghost and I was mad about that.

Everything is disposable these days ... people change jobs, partners, cars,
and beliefs like they change their socks.

Wow.... what a rant :uhoh: I get a little cheesed at this Dixi cup world at times.

People can buy whatever they want... just so long as they are not spending
my money.

I do have to add that I have in the past spent money on diamonds :banghead:
for a girl... I'm still trying to figure out why.

Has it been so long that you've forgotten?

"hokkmike"My two vices are guns and guitars, both of which appreciate in value. Not as much as we'd like to think however. I don't buy either for investments, but to use.

ah,a man with the same vices as me lol!We gotta chat sometime, besides guns guitar is a passion of mine.I am mainly a strat player(humbuckers),but sometime soon hope to get a Lespaul (or 4) also lol!

alot of times people have said to me "why do you need that many guns?"Phtt!
if it makes you happy, then what the hey?My bills come first, unfortunately lately bills leave me with nothing left!

eh,whats the saying"one mans trash is another man treasure",and ugh I dont mean to sound cheezy but I try to remember to keep my treasures in heaven, not on Earth...family,friends,health and love...everything else is icing on the cake...not that I wouldnt cry if I lost my guns and gats though..
I really dont care what other people spend their money on,if it dont effect me just like my collection doesnt effect anybody else...granted Im single though lol!

2transams,thats a "his&hers" contrast truely haha!Congrats to you both and wish you well!

agreed about the scoffer comment lol!Wish I still had my G.I Joes from when I was a kid, heard those are highly collectable now.

some of my shooting buddies have called me stupid for spending money on a couple rifles that I keep but dont shoot, saying what a waste to buy it and not shoot it.But those 2 or 3 I have are in such pristine condition that I just never shot them yet...

As several have said, what someone spends their money on is their business.

What ticks me off is when it becomes MY money through taxes to bail their sorry butt out when they've wasted money for years and suddenly can't provide for themselves because they haven't saved anything. (Or their credit card balances get to be too much through idiotic spending sprees.)
