I'm trying to build up a gun collection. I'm on a budget, but I need another toy soon. I already have:

-Ruger 10/22 Rifle
-WASR 7.62 Hi-Cap, Standard Stock Rifle
-Mossberg 590 20", 8+1, cylinder bore Shotgun
-Glock 19 9mm autoloading pistol
-Smith and Wesson .38 Special K-frame revolver

I'm tempted to buy one of those Kel-Tec 9mm carbines that are compatible with my Glock mags. I like military/HD stuff that I may not get the chance to own come future legislation or something I can conceal carry. I like durability and something that will go bang every time.

I think what I really need is a .308 or .223/5.56 rifle. Maybe a cheap FAL? Or a cheap AR-15? Or something else? I don't like buying used guns and $1000 including a number of mags, optics (if needed), and some ammo is pushing my budget.

I'd vote for a FAL or save some bucks and get an M1A that's be my first choice but you're pushing $1000 unless you get a chicom rifle which are good in their own right and I'm actually waiting for one of those to pop up for myself, they run around $800-850 m1a's are beautiful great guns no-matter who makes em

Go for the .223, its the first pick of mine to take to the range. It is easier on the wallet to shoot too.

It looks like you aren't much of a hunter by your above guns and the fact that you haven't mentioned hunting. I voted .308 since you can get a M1A in that caliber and you can hunt big game with that if ever the need arises. Might be pushing the $1000 for a new one with mags unless you went with a synthetic or used rifle.

I too went with .308, as an intrical part of culture modern enthusiest should have one rifle that can allow you to hunt anything in NA.

A .308 autoloading rifle. I don't have any personal experience with the FAL or M1A, but I like the G3.

+1 308
+2 1911
but i went with a 223 rather than a 308. the ar-15 can be configured soo many ways to please your needs and ammo is much less $ than a 308; about as economical as a 45acp.
try for a 1/9 twist so if you find 300 yards you can be very accurate with 62 or 69 grain ammo and still use 55 nicely at 100 yards.

every respectable person needs a 1911, save up, make that your next purchase. Get a good one and you will never regret it.

Since you already have an AK in 7.62, I think the 5.56 would be a bit redundant. A good battle rifle in .308 would broaden the scope of your collection.

It looks like .308 rifle is winning out. I think I'll be picking up an M1A or an FAL. I've always liked the looks of an FAL but I'm researching the M1A now...

It seems like my FAL options are:

1. Build one (I don't think I trust myself as I've never seen one before)
2. Buy a Century L1A1(?)/R1A1(not sure the difference?) and try to find one with an Imbel receiver. I'm not totally opposed to this but I'm worried something else will be wrong and I want this to work right out of the box.
3. Buy a DSA STG58. This seems to be their cheapest listed at $1200 on their website but someone told me they go for $800 realistically. Is this true?

Considering the cost of 308, I just don't see the point. My friend just blew $1200 on some FAL variant that took over $200 worth of ammo just to get the gas system working, and even then it won't cycle reliably.

Don't know what to recommend. Save your money for the impending economy collapse?

so when you said .308 rifle you meant a semi-auto, like the M1A and FAL, not a Bolt-action "reach out" rifle?

Of your mentioned choices I say go for the AR-15 type in .223 or .even the AR-10 in .308. but I say you need a bolt-action gun. Try out a Mossin Nagant the cost will be minimal and it is a wicked cool rifle.

Bond- Although I'd like a nice bolt action some day, I'm more focused on rifles that will appreciate in value come the next piece of legislation. I think nice .308 bolt action hunting rifles will be around for a while. I really like my friend's Savage 10fp but I want a semi right now.

Obviously, .308 is way more expensive than .223 but I already have a 7.62X39 rifle and everyone and their mom has an AR-15. I'd like something with a little more power. Still, at the right price I'm still considering an AR. I just don't think they're anything special. M1A's and FAL's seem so much more interesting.
