Suggestions for 458 Win Mag

Just picked up my first really big bore, a Ruger 77 in 458 Win Mag. Now what can I do with it? The Nutria are getting bigger, and there's lots of armadillos.

Your gun can probably handle both of those animals. It could even probably take out 2 or 3 at once if you lined them up right.

I load 400 grain speer jhp's and run 'em up to about 2200fps for a 45-70 ballistic twin without getting the crap kicked outa me by full house .458's. They shoot great as long as the bullet is seated out on the 2nd groove

PS- 64 grains of IMR-3031

you know...those Nutria probably ARE going to be an issue now after Katrina and Rita.

Those can be loaded down to 45-70 levels and up to take Cape Nutria er...Buffalo.

I got some 500 Gr FMJ loaded to 1900 fps with it. Will play with it tomorrow if I can sneak away. This second childhood is gonna be expensive.

The posters comments about a 45/70 level load are exactly what I did for the first few years. Reduced load still makes a big splash shooting stuff like mellons. Then you hand it to your buddy with the Hornady Heavy Magnum in the magazine! But 400 grains at 2200 is a pretty hot 45/70. Try about 1800 fps (since you're old and scared ).

I picked up a 77 in .458 a few years ago for a price I couldnt pass up. 405 gn lead bullets at 2000 fps make a lead splash like a paintball on a rock. And nearly zero recoil at those levels. The stock open sights are kinda cheesy, but Brownells sellls different inserts for the front, buuut I'm still not sure what I want for the rear.

Bring your .458 up north and use it in the spring for woodchucks. Shoot the 'chuck and plow the field at the same time.

Killed a steel plate with it this morning. Not near the recoil i was warned about. I may even carry it on duty. Previous owner must be getting feeble. All that soft living.

I've got 300 gr, 350 gr, and ordered 405 gr. I think this is next years deer rifle.

On the serious side...I would invest in some IMR-4198 and perhaps some RL-7.

I might even see if there is any loads for RL-10...and somthing else...shooting some CB's out of it...I would try some Trail-Boss with a 405 hard cast...might be a good bunny-buster, that one. I know that it is in my 45-70 and I can shoot it all day long with no bruising.

405 grain Remington bulk bullets at 1800-2000 are great for hunting and loaded to full pressure are fun for plinking.
