I enjoy target shooting w/ my rifles out to 300yrds but I am not sure where I am hitting the target until I take a walk down to the target. Does anyone here have suggestions of what spotting scope and tripod to use so that I can clearly see the hits at 300yrds and not spend more then $600. I went cheap the first time and purchased a barska 20-60x60 and can't see much past 100yrds clearly

This scope and a good quality tripod should give you what you need for well under your budget.

Celestron 52252 100mm Ultima Zoom Spotting Scope

With that said, if I had a $600 budget I would buy this. Being able to view bullet holes at 300+ yards with a spotting scope is always going to be problematic at this price point. This system will work out to 1000 yards should you decide to extend your range. They also sell one for $100 less that has a 500 yard range.

Another vote for the Celestron 100mm Ultra. I looked through a lot of spotters at Cabelas and Bass Pro. The two best I found for under $400 were the Redfield and the Celestron. The Celestron was brighter, but its also massive. I found a nice Slim table tripod that hold it very well.

I have long been a Leupold consumer, but last year I got hooked on Vortex. I bought a supper high magnification Vortex last hunting season to add to my line up, and I can't find a single thing about it that I don't like, except it's weight, it is large and heavy. But it performs well enough that at about 2 miles away I was able to see the fur fly through the air on both my Son and Daughter in laws deer when they were shot. In absolute honesty, both of those deer were at least 2 miles away, and I could see with crystal clear definition, the flies buzzing around the eye's of both animals at 60X, yes flies at 2 miles away!

That spotting scope was like $550 I think, which isn't really much when it regards spotting scopes. I have Leupold's that are in the $1,500 range that aren't as clean as that Vortex, oh it's so hard to say that about Leupold, but the facts, are the facts. But when buying spotting scopes, don't waste your money on bargain brand junk. I have seen a lot of junk glass over the years while working retail, and even bought one years ago in the $250 range, (Bushnell) that gave me head aches. It was basically useless beyond 200 yds. unless you were looking at trees or large objects, but you couldn't use it to view bullet holes at 200 yds..
