My wife said she needs her own pistol I said yeah and your own rifle. I tried not to act to excited as I have been scheming to buy more guns. I'll probably get her a Glock 19 for a pistol; however, I need advise on a rifle.

My question comes as what rifle to get her and how to secure it in her Accura MDX.

Thanks for your suggestions.

Why keep a rifle in the vehicle? If she has a carry permit, she can carry the pistol for self protection. In almost any circumstance I can think of, she wouldn't be able to get to the rifle in time for it to be any use anyway.

Leaving unattended guns in vehicles is great way to get your guns stolen.

It's good that you are thinking of a way to secure it though, if you must leave a long gun in a vehicle. I don't have any solid suggestions on that.

uh, how about a little more info.

what's your wife's experience shooting firearms ?

The statement "I'll get her a Glock " speaks of hmmm,
yeah go buy her some fancy lingerie instead of getting her a
gift certificate to get something sexy with maybe a suggestion
as to ... well, hope you get the point let her pick the gun or guns
she wants and if you think it's a bad idea well talk about it. Toss
around some ideas go to a range and try different types of handguns
and rifles -

I agree with blind justice. Do not just buy your wife a gun without letting her go handle and preferably shoot it. A good option is an NRA certified pistol class where they bring a large variety of guns out for people to shoot. And do not automatically assume she will not be able to handle anything heavier than a 9mm. My wife shot a 1911 for quite a while until she discovered my
Sig P220 and confinscated it. The most important thing to do is get them insructed with the proper stance and techniques. Once you get them in the proper stance focusing on the front site they can shoot pretty much anything. My wife is 5'5" 130 pounds and has no problem shooting a 44mag. I also agree that having a long gun in a vehicle is pointless unless you live on a ranch and need to kill coyotes. You can not keep a long gun secure and out of plain and still make it feasible to quickly use. If you want to get your wife her own rifle great but I don't think it should be for the vehicle.

How about you let HER decide what guns she gets? Does she pick out all of your power tools, beer, and football teams? Many women (and men) don't like Glocks because of the somewhat thick grip.

If she isn't comfortable with anything except a FAL, not much point in worrying about securing it in the trunk.

I'll bet those folks stuck in traffic and pulled out of their cars and beaten and killed during the Rodney King riots would have liked to have had a rifle. Same goes for those folks stuck on the side of the highway fleeing Katrina.

My only option, if I want to have a firearm available for my use at all away from home, is to carry a longgun. Currently, I have a Rem. 870. It sits under the rear seat of my S-10 Blazer, and I have a cable looped through the Knoxx Copstock folder and secured with a padlock. When I am in the vehicle, it is unlocked and free for my use. I also pile stuff on top of it (jackets, etc) to conceal it. Also, my vehicle doesn't have any NRA or gun stickers on it to advertise that I am a shooter, and my vehicle is older, so it is not so much a target.

Low profile is the way to go...

I have been know to carry a rifle or shotgun in my truck for a variety of reasons, civil unrest, going to the farm, hunting, hiking an area, etc. If your wife is set on a glock (let her look around, who knows she may like one of the guns you already own and you can buy yourself a new one!). Looking at the Kel-Tec carbines that use glock mags is one option and easy of only one type mag and bullet. The inexpensive Mosin-Nagants, used marlin 336 in 30-30, SKS, or a good 12 or 20 ga shotgun are all viable options. They do make portable gun safes to be installed in cars. Another option is the safety locks around the bottom 'leg' of a seat and through the action of the rifle. The locked trunk is also a viable option for car owners.

Accura MDX

Okay, car with a trunk, right? Just get a good rifle (Marlin 336, SKS, WASR-10, whatever...), and put it in the trunk. Do rust preventative regularly, though.

A concealed handgun, kept on your person, loaded and ready to go, would be much more useful in both of those circumstances. In many cases long guns must be stored unloaded and inaccesible to the driver/passenger. That makes them really hard to deploy quickly in an emergency.

If you are in danger of being car jacked, or dragged out of your car and beaten, a pistol on your person is better then a rifle or shotgun in the trunk. In a disaster where everyone is evacuating, a concealed handgun is much more "discrete" then openly displaying a long gun. (Although openly displaying a long gun has deterent value, it also can attract unwanted attention from the authorities).

Granted, some jurisdictions are more liberal on long guns in vehicles, but even then it's much harder to operate a long gun while in a vehicle then a handgun.

Now, if you can't get a concealed carry permit, for whatever reason, I can understand wanting to have a long gun in your vehicle.

Thanks for your input. I'll probably nix the rifle idea in her car and get her a pistol. I will get her a rifle start teaching her to use it.
Thanks.

The Acura MDX is a sport utility vehicle built of the Honda Pilot platform. No trunk, just a cargo area. Locking storage would be wise for such a vehicle.

No, no, no. The Acura MDX is a sport utility vehicle based off of the second generation Honda Odyssey Minivan, which in turn was based off of the 1997-2002 Honda Accord. The Honda Pilot and Honda Ridgeline followed the MDX.

the type and size of gun chosen by the end user is not a 'one size fits all' proposition; since your wife is the end user, she needs to feel comfortable and confident in the hardware she uses...IE: she needs to pick her own gun!

you can serve as a supportive advisor and help her during the 'trial and error' phase; a good place to start would be to find an NRA certified instructor that offers a variety of classes cover types of handguns, shooting techniques, safety issues, storage options, etc; better yet would to find a range that rents various handguns that she could try out;

after the knowledge is gained and the precepts are experienced on the range...then she makes her choice that helps safeguard her life; I know that my answer is kinda vague when looking for specific recommendations about which firearm and why...but there is alot about weapons ownership that I learned through trial and error, alot of buy, sell, trade, and a run-in with my local justice system when an accidental/negligent discharge that I was involved with caused some significant property damage;

trust me...weapons ownership is very rewarding and a large responsibility all wrapped into a sharp double edged sword...choose wisely and never get too comfortable as an owner
