Wife REALLY wants an AK-47 - advice?

If your in Houston go to Armory USA and get Hector to build you a 74 in 5.45X39. They built mine and it rocks. They answer the phone as Elk Ridge Tool and Die.

Dead-set on an AK? If not, look into an AR. Barely any recoil at all (I shoot that thing one handed all the time--Gotta practice my mall-ninja skillz) and they're starting to level out in price now. You can get a complete DPMS for under $800--just be willing to look, look, look and wait 3 times as much as you look.

Otherwise you could convert a Saiga, or try and fight for a WASR/AK variant.

david - good question - how does the AR15 compare to the AK's legendary ease of maintenance/tolerance of not so great maintenance?
Somewhat more complicated, small parts you can easily lose, and less tolerant of lack of lubrication and/or dirt in the receiver. Either are reliable if maintained halfway decently, though.

Get one of each

I've got a 'problem' that more people probably wish they had - my wife really wants an AK-47. Well, that's not the problem so much as finding one, or a reasonable substitute

only problem I see is if you dont get your wife what she wants. :neener:
mine had to have a pink pistol to carry, I got her a Walther P22 and had it duracoated pink. I have a pic shoudl ya wanna see it. so Happy Wife = Happy Hubby. :p

oh yea If you cant find an AK. my FFL has some in stock and not overpriced. call 972-564-1520 Wortham firearms, you can tell him I had ya call if you do call, might give you a discount or charge you more depending on how bad I made fun of him that day. He will ship to your FFL. hope that helps

Another great option in the $500-$600 range is the Berreta 9mm, or .40 carbines. They are sharp and shoot very good, have low recoil and are pretty cheap to shoot. (Started to buy one for my wife, but wasn't sure if she would like it. Got a cheap little hi-point for her to shoot and while it is just plain ugly it shoot great. She didn't care for it, but both my boys and my daughter love it. (my oldest boy, 15, took it away from me!)

Yea If she asked for the AK, she wants that particular firearm for whatever reason. Even though you may think it's a better choice to get her a different type of firearm, she probably just wants the AK so try to not read into it. You could always ask though : )

Get her what she wants, if you get her an AR and she doesn't like it, you're gonna be in the doghouse.

Also, I'd recommend a Saiga. So easy to convert that you don't even need a shoulder thing that goes up.

She is only 5 feet tall and under a hundred pounds, so she wants something that would fit her stature.

7.62x39 ain't exactly a hard kicking round. Especially out of a heavy wood stocked AK. .223 is even softer shooting. She should have no problem shooting an AK quite well.

If you look at many conflicts around the world where the indigenous peoples aren't much bigger than your wife (Southeast Asia comes to mind) they seem to manage the full auto version pretty well, I doubt your wife will have much trouble.

Most important thing is no matter what AK you get, make sure its got a Tapco G2 trigger.

There are a handful of reasonably priced AKs here in the for sale forum (one is a 5.45x39 which should shoot about as softly as a .223, but ammo might be difficult to find for it).

+1 everybody else; she wants an AK, get her an AK. If she ends up disliking it for whatever reason, you'll probably be able to make some money reselling the thing given current trends in the gun world.

She might even be interested in converting a Saiga herself, with or without your help ;) You'll have a choice of standard or NATO-length (~1.25" longer) stock, and I'd wager it'll be easier to find an unconverted Saiga than a "ready-to-go" AK.

It sounds to me like you answered your own question. Take her to some vendors of Kalashnikovs so she can determine which variant is to her liking. My suggestion is to look for one chambered for a cartridge that you already have a rifle for(if possible). Keeping ammo on hand will be that less of a daunting task.

Sounds like a good wife... unfortunately, you have hit about the worst time possible to be in the market for an AK.

I would wait a little bit for the panic spree to end. In the mean time, Kel Tec makes some nice little rifles and carbines that are lighter than an AK and are affordable and well made to boot. The wife might like a Sub2000, and SU16, or a PLR.

If not an AK, the Saiga uses very common calibers: .223, 7.62x39 and the expensive harder recoiling .308.
Do you already use ammo for a .223 or x39 gun?

If she falls for an SKS, then she has a lower-cost rifle.

Advice? Say "ok" and hand her your wallet. :)

I was also going to suggest an AK-74 if you're thinking recoil might be an issue at all.

Either way, I'd avoid folding stocks. They contribute to shooting discomfort much more than recoil. As a bonus, many AKs often have a very short length of pull, which is nice for a petite lady.

A Saiga .223 or x39 with a pistol grip conversion is easy to do and you have what she asked for.

I just finished a .223 a couple of weeks ago (Christmas vacation).

My adivce to you is just get her one. Mine husband got me one and I love it. It is so much fun to shoot. They are a womans against bad guys greatest dream. Those bad guys will run and not stop until they run out of steam. No bad guys will ever mess with her or me because I have one. He he he.

Also consider signing her up for this class:
