Wife REALLY wants an AK-47 - advice?

I'm for buying her the AK. Find one that's cheap and nab it. I'm partial to Saiga conversions, myself.

x39 should be fine once she's used to it, but if you're really concerned about recoil, get a .223, toss in a recoil buffer (great change on my x39!), throw on a stock with a rubber buttpad, and thread the barrel for a '74-style brake. It'll be nice and tame.

Or maybe you can find a Golani, which I've sort of been eyeing.

update

I found a converted SKS yesterday, which will be 'my' 7.62x39. She likes it because the foregrip and stock are adjustable for her reach also.

So that settles us on an AK for her so that we will share the same cartridge - and gets me motivated to reload.

You guys are great :) I'll be checking sources today. Still would like to hear from anyone who has one to sell.

and gets me motivated to reload.

Careful with that part. Just about anything imported--read: affordable--will be non-reloadable. And with the cost of reloadable brass, you won't save enough to make up for the cost of the dies.

On the other hand, loading for accuracy will help, but that's rare for the reputation commie guns have.

And on the third hand, I have ammo when others don't. :)

Got One!

With many thanks to helz_mcfugly for his gun shop recommendation, my wife now has a Romanian underfolder AK-47 and is a very happy woman. She says it fits her just fine.

Thanks again to helz and all the rest of you!

An AK is the perfect gun for your wife. It has a shorter stock than most American rifles, for one thing. She likes it, which is al that matters, IMO. And finally, if she's not as into guns as you are, she might appreciate the ease of maintenance. They are really easy to take care of.

If she likes it, get it. It's not a tough choice, and if you want her to be happy let her get what she wants instead of trying to convince her that you know better than she does.

Reloadable brass isn't cheap, but I remember the "dry time" between the ban
on cheap chicom tins and new pallets of russian coming in. We did some PMC
reloads at the time and I still have that brass today just in case.

S&B, Win, Rem brass is also reloadable. It seems expensive to the throwaway
consumer types who still remember $4/box wolf, but if wolf imports stop even
that will shoot to $12/box overnight. Suddenly, the boxer brass stuff that
can be reloaded doesn't look so bad --if you bought it before it was $20/box.

I'm not huge and I can tell you that the AK fits me perfectly. It truly is one-size-fits-all. She will love it.

""Wife REALLY wants an AK-47 - advice? ""

Yeah. Buy her one.

Edit to add:
..now. While you can still get a $300 rifle for $500-$600. Don't wait too much longer or it'll cost you 8!

I'd get her a Ruger Mini 14 in the Russian round. Or I'd get her a .223. That 7.62 x 39 is a pretty good round....about like a 30-30. After she got used to the Ruger she'll like it, I'd guess. Also it's a handy little thing, and would be easy for her to carry and to shoot.

Lucky you. You have a wife who likes guns. Now tell her she needs a very large collection...then buy her a safe.....

Teach her to shoot a pistol and then tell her to get a couple of Smith's and a Ruger or two. Tell her that she just has to have an old Colt of some sort.

Get her a nice 20 DU. She needs one of those. Teach her to shoot trap and maybe even skeet. You'll need to get a gun too, of course; because it's more fun for both of you to be shooting.

Get her a cute Annie Oakley outfit.

You've got yourself a real prize there.

Sounds like she's built for a 5.45x39 Polish Tantal -- super mild recoil (even before considering the comp on the front end) and the Polish side-folder wire stock has an even shorter length of pull than the "Warsaw Pact" length wooden stocks for regular AKs.

Lets see: Really cool pro-active wife wants a awsome rifle she can shoot with you.....Get her one!!!!
Dude, that is really COOL I wish my wife was like that. Even in the 7.62x39 rember you got kids smaller than her shooting them FA in 3rd world countries.

If it were my wife, after getting down on my knees and thanking God she was asking me to buy another gun, I'd try to steer her to a M-1 Carbine. 1.) I've never cared for AKs, they always seemed so agricultural, and 2.) I genuinely think she'd like a Carbine better in the long run due to the ergonomics, reduced recoil, noise, & blast, and simpler manual-of-arms.

You are a lucky guy.
A friend just bought a Rom. WASR at a gun show in Southhaven (MS) about three weeks ago, before the panic really 'infected' people.

He might have gotten in when the doors opened, and already had a good selection of semi-s, but it's his first AK (nice addition to various Minis, MNs, SKS, SVT-40..).
The fact that your lady likes dependable/Russian-designed (the terms are quite interrelated) weapons indicates a lot in common with so many of us.
Have fun.

About the SKS - they look sort of long with all that wood.

the sks is about the same length as an AK and costs half as much in my experience AKMS are more accurate though and has the plus of easier take down and a detachable magazine
