Newbie here..I'm planning to buy my first handgun tommorow and my eyes are set on a glock 19. It fits well in my hands and seems small enuf to conceal but confident enuf for self defence. Plus, 9mm ammo's cheap. But is it the right choice for a first gun? suggestions anyone? :)

It's an excellent choice - simple, ultra-reliable, light, easy to carry and use. You'll enjoy it. One thing - get the version with night sights, or buy them separately and install them. The standard plastic sights are perfectly usable, but can break off at the wrong moment. The steel night sights are much tougher.

given that you say it fits your hands, a glock 19 is a fine choice... though for a first gun, i strongly recommend something in 22. very strongly.

@pauli: since this seems to be the "just one gun" that the gentlemen is buying, and it's for self-defense, he should definitely stick with 9mm.

@ikko: It's still a very good idea to consider also getting a .22 pistol in the near future. Inexpensive plinking 9mm ammo is around 10c a shot, equivalent .22 ammo is 2c a shot, and has almost no muzzle blast or recoil. Most people find that learning and improving their skills comes far easier (and definitely cheaper) on a .22 pistol.

If you're only going to buy one gun for the time being, definitely the 9mm. If the Glock 19 fits you well, you really can't go wrong getting one (naysayers be darned). But if you find yourself wanting to go shooting regularly to improve your skills, you'll definitely want to get a .22 pistol. The hands-down favorites on this forum are the Ruger (Mk I, II, III or 22/45) or the Browning Buckmark. Either can be found in the mid-$200s used. Run a Search on the THR archives for more info on either of the above.

Good luck on your upcoming pistol purchase, may it serve you well. Welcome aboard the High Road, -MV

+1 to Matthewvanitas on the usefulness of a .22. However, if you've got the G19, you can buy a .22 conversion unit for it (I highly recommend the Advantage Arms unit over the Ciener). This will cost about the same as a separate .22 pistol, but will use the same trigger, frame, etc. as your G19, which is useful for practice and training purposes.

+1. My thoughts exactly! And please do learn the Glocks "manual of arms", concerning reholstering and all that stuff.

Be safe!

I concur with the G19 and .22 conversion, but if it were me, I would buy the G19 used. Your post says "tomarrow" so maybe you have a local shop that you want to purchase from, OK can't argue with that.

It may be just me, but an ANIB Glock is just as pretty as a new one and you save $100 or more. There are plenty of sources for pre-owned perfection. I saw a very nice G19 ANIB with 2 15 round mags for $425 OTD at a recent gun show.

My first handgun purchase was a G19, second purchase was a Advantage Arms conversion. I love the G19 and will never get rid of it. I did win a Buckmark .22 in a contest on this forum so I sold my conversion. It worked like a dream but couldn't justify keeping both. Good luck with the 19, it is a great handgun.

yeah I would also go with a used glock with night sights, because from what I have seen they are pretty durable and that the finish on a used one should be pretty nice as the tenifer is pretty darn durable.

Im not a huge fan of plastic, but honestly its hard to go wrong with a Glock 19. It is an excellent firearm that is possibly the best balance of all things that one could ask for in a pistol. It is relatively cheap to shoot, it fires a respectable cartridge, its large enough to be usefull at the range, and small enough to carry with the proper helt/holster. Its an excellent choice as a first pistol, or as a do-it-all type of weapon.

I second the suggestion to pick up a .22 at some point down the line as well.

first gun

ok i make no bones about it i am not a fan of glock i am a die hard 1911 fan that said.
i agree whole heartedly with the 22 converson for pratice and the addition of steel night sites both are hands down the best advice ive seen here. also you might think of an inexpensive 22 revolver for plinking say a used h&r 949 it comes in 6 or 9 shot is inexpensive to buy around 130 bucks i own one and have taken small game with it. as well as where i work i am alone at night in a remote aera the building is not much more than a shack and i use 22 shot to nail rats for fun. the boss likes it because it helps control the vermin population and i keep in pratice. though i do recomend remington shot over cci better penatration with remington due to more powder and larger shot.

I like the Glock 19s size. I'll caution as per my usual caution to carriers of Glocks to carry in a holster that fully covers the trigger for safety. If you carry IWB, it might get a little heavy after all day wear, but it's easier to shoot than the compacts like the Glock 26.

I really don't see a need in a .22 conversion for the gun for the cheap ammo. 9mm is dirt cheap now days, not as cheap as .22, but cheap. I will say, though, .22 is ultra fun and a super way for a novice shooter to gain marksmanship skills. If it was me, I wouldn't want a conversion, I'd want another gun. It's a good excuse for a future purchase, don't ya think? :D
