I'm looking for a detachable suppressor suitable for use on my 45-70 Encore pistol barrel. A LGS recently obtained their Class 3 SOT and have a number of suppressors from a well known manufacturer in stock, however upon contacting this manufacturer I was told that their suppressors were not recommended for this application due to pressure issues, even with the significantly reduced handloads I'll be using. I'd prefer a detachable suppressor that can be used on other "hosts" as well, but I'll go with an integral from SSK or similar manufacturers if need be. Anyone here have knowledge of a suitable detachable suppressor suitable for 45-70? Thanks -LG

I built one for my 458 socom but it would be a hand full on a pistol.

Suppressing the 45/70 (especially in a handgun) is going to be a bit of a trick unless you have a custom suppressor built.

I had been wanting to suppress my Marlin Guide Gun in 45/70 and all the major manufactureres stated their 45 acp cans wouldn't handle the volume of gas created by 45/70 subsonics let alone full power loads.

That said, Tom Bowers told me at SAR West that his CAC 45 will handle 45/70 subsonics and he stated that there's a lot of of folks in Texas that use his cans to suppress their 45/70's.

His CAC 45 is a large subgun can (if your not familiar) and while not the most attractive, they appear to be quite sturdy (did I mention they are large?) and have an ok reputation for suppression.

The big selling point for Toms cans is that he absolutely stands behind his product.

Fill it up with lead, get a baffle strike, cross thread the mount and all you have to do is send him the can (and 20 bucks for return shipping) and he'll repair it, no quesions asked.

I'd give Tom a call (if you don't want to go through the time and expense of a custom can) and see what he says.

Again, his cans ain't pretty but I bet it'll do what you want.

Thanks ATCDoktor for the info on the CAC 45. Checked their website & did some looking around too. Customer satisfaction is very high and although at 11.5" in length it's pretty large, I believe it will do nicely for what I'm looking for. I was surprised by the modest cost too. I'm going to give Tom a call tomorrow and stop by my LGS to set the wheels in motion! As they just recently got their Class 3 SOT, perhaps they'll be interested in adding some to their inventory as well. Again, thanks! -LG

Talked with Tom about the CAC 45 for my Encore 45-70 pistol and have decided on the Vers 50 instead. Same length (11.5") as the CAC 45, but designed for .510 projectiles at up to 2200fps. Naturally my loads will be subsonic, but illustrates the robust construction of the Vers 50 ..which is new & not even catalogued yet, but in stock & available for shipment. The Vers 50 will not only be good for the Encore pistol, but should be great for some other hosts as well, such as my .50 Beowulf and .500 S&W NEF Handi Rifle! With the NEF's barrel shortened to 17" & threaded it should make for a nice quiet package ..all bite/no bark! Soon as I get info on best thread size from the 'smith, I'll have my Class3 LGS place the order & begin "the waiting game" once again! -LG

My Bowers Vers 50 is on order at my friendly LGS. Hopefully the paperwork will be processed quickly. Tom & Dorothy are great folks to do business with, and I'm certainly looking forward to trying out the Vers 50 on several different hosts when my "stamp" finally gets here. In the meantime I've got some barrels to get threaded! -LG
