Suppressor in VT?

Vermont's Title 13 has a law (I can't recall the number) that states that anyone in possession of a suppressor is subject to a fine of $50.

Does this mean that there's no legal way to own a suppressor in VT, even with the proper federal paperwork? I plan on contacting the local BATFE guy about it, but I thought I'd see what opinions were, or if any other states have similar laws that are void with the tax stamp and such.

Don't want you to feel like you're being ignored here: the Bardwell NFA FAQ, Gemtech, and AAC all say no suppressors in Vermont. If you want to check with law enforcement, I'd suggest asking state police, not BATF.

IMHO, for do-it-yourselfers a simple $50 sounds much better than jail time mandated in other states. Not suggesting any toying around on a lathe, but it sounds like if one were to attempt any funny business, VT would be the place to do it.

Oops. I didn't remember the penalty correctly. It's not $50, but $25. If anyone's interested, here's the law:

Section 4010. Gun silencers

A person who manufactures, sells or uses or possesses with intent to sell or use, an appliance known as or used for a gun silencer shall be fined $25.00 for each offense. The provisions of this section shall not prevent the use of possession of gun silencers for military purposes when so used or possessed under proper military authority and restriction.

Actually, now that I read it again, it looks like you might be able to own them as long as you don't intent to use or sell them. Not that there's any point if you can have fun with your sexy suppressor at the range.

Most states have laws like this pertaining to machine guns, suppressors, short barreled rifles and shotguns, destructive devices, and what ever else. However there is usually an exemption for NFA weapons on which taxes have been paid. Leading up to the passing of the GCA of 34 states began to pass their own laws against suppressors to cut down on poaching. Unless the law has been amended there is probably no provision for legally owned, federally registered suppressors.

I was working on legistlative action concerning this issue for about the last 8mos. It was held up somewhere in the system this year but I am optimistic for the next session.

All I did was contact certain key members and explained the stupidity of the $25 fine vs. Federal regs and their $250,000 fine/jail time. They agreed and were trying to find a way to remove the $25 fine from the books as it is an outdated state statute.

Hopefully things will be squared away in the coming months. I look forward to being able to legally sell suppressors/silencers up here in the Green Mountains soon
