SURPRISE Bush In Iraq

"What was the point of the trip, exactly?"

Oh, c'mon, think about it for a minute will ya? It'll come to you.

Me? I think it's a great idea. A big part of life is just showing up and being there for people.

And what's with you guys stuck on the cost? Do you spend all of your time thinking about money? You know the old saying about knowing the price of everything and value of nothing?

I don't see Saddam or OBL putting in any appearances.

John

Can you imagine if Clinton had tried to do the same?

For one, I don't think he'd have the cajones.

And second, there would be plenty of folks willing to broadcast his arrival there beforehand to the insurgents... (Who, me?) ;)

Can't help but reflect on the all-but-nonexistant likelihood of President Bush's predecessor bothering to show support for the troops by getting anywhere close to a combat zone. Way to go, Mr. President!

The man has guts. He didn't sneak in in a bomber or low-profile fighter, he rode into town on Air Force One.

He might as well have leaned out the window and given Saddam, Ossama, and the entire crowd the finger, while a brass band played "America, the Beautiful".

Or as somebody on another board said:
"At least he didn't spend the day hiding in the White House getting a blow*** from an intern....At taxpayer's expense, like the last President".

Love him, or hate him, at least THIS President has the brass to stand for something, and stick to it, no matter what the "elites" think.
Unlike most of the other limp noodle's who've held the office.

The Dems are left with nothing to complain about this time but the usual.....
"He lied, (about staying in Texas), and he spent the taxpayer's money", ("Which WE wanted to spend").

Split screen.

Left side--Bush is grinning ear to ear over congress passing drug legislation attached to medicare. At best 1-1/2 million seniors have a real problem accessing drugs necessary for their well-being. To fix that problem Bush encourages a spinelessrepublican congress to commit to spending $400 billion. A craven, cowardly, gutless, lily-livered, poltroonish, poor-spirited, and pusillanimous political act if ever there was one. Completely unnecessary in the real world but essential in the world of Karl Rove. There is no limit to the price to paid for a single vote. A politician without a discernable political belief system.

Right side--Stand hard and fast against islamofascists terrormongers. Standing fast against internal political opposition. Standing fast and hard for his troops. The ebodiment of a wartime leader.

Can anyone reconcile these two snapshots?

The man is his own contradiction and that is what is so madening.

3 great moments in history:
Washington at Valley Forge.
Lincoln at Gettysburg.
Bush in Baghdad.
Awesome history right before our eyes.

Waitone nailed it. Every time Bush does something great, even something so rare as to go into a combat zone, he follows it up with something purely political (and costly).

In many respects, Bush is very much the politician that Clinton was, but portrays himself as the opposite.

The biggest difference between the two is that Bush is more prone to taking risks. Clinton would never have gone into Afghanistan, much less Iraq. The political costs would have been too high. Bush certainly must have known the political costs of going into Iraq, but did so anyway.

That said, going to Iraq is a master move.

But what's this thread doing in General Discussion?

Now, this presents a huge problem for the Democrats.

The smart, Capt_Happypants-approved response would be: "It was a nice surprise for the troops, and I'm glad everything turned out okay."

They aren't going to do that.

No matter what the Democrats try to say, it's going to sound a lot like the grumblings of Namby-Pamby Mr Pouty Pants Liberals(tm). I would bet that FOX will play that particular footage of the troops ad nauseum, and then run video of the Nine Dwarves kvetching to no end.

One should not let their hatred overcome their judgement. That's a lesson that most Democrats haven't bothered to learn.

Waitone, I can`t disagree on your Left Side point, but only because I don`t know that much about it. However, the `Rats would have lied as usual to that same group and spent at least as much if not more. Every election we hear how the GOP wants old people to starve and die for lack of medical care and they buy into it lockstep.

Now on the Right Side, well, it was a very savvy move.:)

I strongly disagree.

Hillary is now in Afghanistan. She is demonstrating that she has always loved and respected our military. The Democrats are doing just fine.

The president is going to a war zone to visit and wish a happy thanksgiving to the troops that HE sent there. I am quite proud of him for doing that. I don't mind picking up the tab at all.

i have absolutley no problem footing the bill on this one.

what a President, i have stood behind him from the begining and still am standing right there.

Way to go Sir is all i can say.

What a guy, flying into a country we are in the middle of a war with in Air Force One:D

I think it's awesome. I bet the secrect service was not real happy
about him going to Bagdad. I dont know if I can vote for Bush again
but I sure would like to sit down with him and buy a round
or three.

Mike

Having spent a couple of combat tours in Vietnam, I can assure you that his visit is GREATLY appreciated by our military personnel, here, there, and everywhere. Anybody who's carping about "cost and grandstanding" doesn't understand and never will -- unless they find themselves in harm's way in the service of our country sometime.

Salute! And WELL DONE!

Same here. He could have very easily sat home nice and safe eating Turkey in Tejas, D.C. or Camp David with a bunch of tuxedos.

Clinton never went to Bosnia or Somalia to show support for the troops he sent over there.

Hey, what do you guys think GW was packing while he was over there? I'm thinking a Sig 229.

If you were ever stationed away from your family during a holiday time in a war zone you would know what a HUGH MORAL booster this was for our soldiers.

Risking his life to visit the troops in a war zone instead of making a trip to a local military base in the states was outstanding.

Way to go Mr. President.

I have to give him a thumbs up on this one too! Way to go!

There are other things that I'm not happy about with President Bush, but on this particular Thanksgiving, he did the right thing and I for one am thankfull that he is our President.
