Could someone confirm this - If I can slide a feeler gage between the barrel and the cylinder and the feeler touches the walls is that considered its gap or is it when the gage can be inserted into the gap WITHOUT touching either side?

I checked the cylinder to bore gap and its definitely between .008 and .01.

This pistol is brand new from the factory. I've read the posts about the acceptable ranges, but considering this would you send the gun back to SW?

or let it go?

They contact both surfaces of the gap to be measured, whether it's a revolver or an engine valve tappet.

Feeler gages are used by, surpise! Feel.
You should feel slight slight drag or resistance when the gage is slid back and forth.

If the gap measures between .008" and .010", I doubt very much if S&W would do anything about it, as I believe it is within what they consider acceptable range nowadays.

The SW tech told me their "go no go" gauge is from .003" to .010". But they will fix it if it is slanted such as .005 on top and .010 on bottom. If you call and talk to a tech and advise them your gap is crooked then they have no problem sending you a call tag to ship it in on their dime. He told me to mark on the slip that the "BC gap is crooked". I did this for a J frame and they installed a new barrel to correct the gap and it came back perfect in about 2 weeks. If it is even top to bottom and under .010" they will call it good. I have another J frame with a BC gap of .014" and you better not stand next to me at the range. I should send it back for repairs but I keep putting it off and never think about it until I'm shooting it.
