Swabbing between shots

swab

Yes, spit patches work well for between the shots swabbing. I use patches dampened with pure alcohol (not rubbing alcohol). At the range, I swab after every shot.
Moose milk.....there are probably a bazillion recipes for MM. I use this one:
1/4 cup Ballistol or a water soluble cutting oil
a Tablespoon of Murphy's Oil soap (or a capful of Dawn liquid dish detergent)
Water enough to make a quart.

Spit works fine for matches, but dries out too much for hunting. That's where another lube that stays damp is needed. I'm about out of it, but have used rendered bear oil for forty years.

Also, using linen patches makes it much easier to load. I had to use .498 ball with .018 patching to get best accuracy in my 50. A real pain to load after three rounds or so (after 1 with heavy hunting load of 120gr FF). Went down to .495 ball, and thin linen (old napkins from garage sales), with no loss in accuracy and lots easier loading.

If you're going to do the hunting load (carried as-is all day), use the 7:1 water/cutting oil
patch lube - soak the patch strip, then wring/press absolutely dry between paper towels
and a rolling pin.

In the field, swab fouling 2X with a spit patch, then load with the 7:1 patch.
Good all day (and waaaaaay beyond -- effectively forever.)
