While you're waiting for the next K31, maybe a Swede will show up at the shop, just to confuse you :uhoh:

I also own all three. The Swede is my preference by a wide margin. Of the M38 and M96, I like my 96s best. They are easy to shoot offhand due to the long sight radius.

K31

Swiss ammo is not that scarce, if you have the internet its no problem(about $25/60 rounds). Keep in mind that for comparable ammo in 7.62x54r youd be paying twice what gp-11 costs, and still not get as good of results. I dont really know about sweedish ammo.
Sweede prices have pretty much stablized. The k31 is the new sweede, get em while their still cheap. I think in 5 years, the price will be doubled if not more.
The k31 is a riflemans rifle and designed to be accurate and easy to shoot, you wont be disappointed!

k-31

in my opinion the k-31 is an excellent rifle. I recently bought 2 from big-5 and they sell for a really decent price. the first one i bought was $99 and the second one was $89. so you can catch them on sale at big-5, but you have to inspect the quality that you get. the second one i bought was in amazing condition. the action was way smother than the first. As other people have said it is expensive to mount a scope on the k-31. the mount alone will cost anywhere from 70-100 bucks depending on whether or not you want the detachable one or the permanent one. I prefer the detachable one because you have to drill and tap for screw on the cheaper one. btw...it is a very accurate sniper rifle.

does anyone have any reccomendations on sights for the k-31??

K-31, M1896, etc>>>>>

Have owned, still own all the culprits in consideration. The K-31 is a damn impressive piece of machinery and still (8/19/2005) is listed at $89.00 wholesale, ya cannot buy a Swede that cheaply ever again. So, buy both of them. Both rifles are disgustingly accurate, 7.5mm Swiss is available from more than one or two suppliers, and the 6.5mm Swede is a "regularly loaded" cartridge. However, as someone has noted, why not add to the list a M1895 Chilean in 7x57mm. They can still be found in excellent condition and they will shoot right there with a Swede! (My first high powered rifle was an 1895, mucho years ago) Heck, buy all three, and don't worry about the Swiss magazine, it is not made to be removed, just like the magazine on a British Enfield.

Well I'm going to tell you what you know in your heart is the right decision: Get all three. Not some time in the future either, get all 3 now. Honestly, at the prices I've seen it shouldn't run more than $800. ;)

Buuuuuuuut.....if you MUST pick one than I'm going to be the minority and say M39. for plinking, you cant beat $.07 a round. Sure that stuff isnt the most accurate but if ya handload like you would have to for the other two rifles, than you can make some accurate stuff. Plus you would have the satisfaction of knowing that your rifle has a history. You know it didnt sit by in neutrality! as far as balance goes i find it balances the best of the 3 for me, but I'm more accustomed to longer rifles. The safety isn't so awkward as everyone says and it's stil accurate as hell.

I also own a m96 6.5x55 swede, and as far as I can tell so far it is the best little deer round I've ever owned.
With 120 gr ballistic tips I get nice cloverleafs at 100 yards. :D

Hey, John!

I would suggest that you just keep an eye out for any of the above, and jump on the first one you see in really nice condition for a decent price. (Sorry, I'm not selling any of mine, yet.)

I have a VERY nice Swede M96 which would have to be my favorite of your three choices, and I've even used it in a 100-400 yd. "Rifleman's Challenge" match with some success(got beat by the AR15 and FAL shooters, though). Ammo cost isn't as bad as you might think, I can usually get Igman(Serbian/Bosnian-made) 6.5X55 from Miwall for about $8.00/20 rds. If you can find a nice one for under $300.00, grab it.

My second favorite would be the M39, which you already know all about. I've learned how to work the bolt pretty quickly from the shoulder, I don't think it's all that clumsy even though it's nowhere near as easy as a Lee-Enfield or Springfield.

I haven't gotten a K-31 yet, mostly because of the ammo cost, but if I could find a REALLY nice one for under $150, I'd just get it to have, and suck it up on the ammo costs.
