I have a chance to buy a new Winchester SXR semi auto rifle in .300 Win Mag. I problem is, I have a badly damaged right shoulder and so need to know how bad it kicks, compared to a 7mm bolt action. I was looking for a rifle in .308 but they are in heavy weight tactical rifles, too heavy to hunt with and cost twice as much. Also are they accurate. Should be the same a BAR long action right?

No experiance with the SRX .300 Mag.

But IMO, a BAR 7mm Mag kicks about like a .243 Win bolt-action.
In otherwords, it doesn't hurt atall.
More of a shove then the sharp whack a bolt gun gives you.

Worlds of difference in relative felt recoil between 7mm mag and 300 win mag, The 300 will beat you up without a brake, where the 7mm is not much worse than 30-06, just my opinion though ymmv.

d2wing: The .300 is very sharp, not particularly stout, but sharp. If you want to shoot a lot and not pound your shoulder, practice with Trailboss handloads and save the full power rounds for critters. My .30-.338 is a pussycat with TB loads and truly fun to shoot from the bench, but really requires a standing or kneeling position in the field. After surgery on my shoulder last year, I can only do the full power rounds from the bench occasionally.

If you need someting with some KO power and zilch for recoil try a 6.5x55 NOTHING runs after being hit by a 140gr SST, or core-lock. 120gr BTs knock them dead too. 20+ years of hunting and I have yet to track anything.

Because a fool and his money are easily parted. Gunaholic maybe? I'll just have to resist temptaion as it would end up unused in my crowded safe.

NO real world experience with the 300 Win Mag, but I do have a 300 Wby Mag.. and a 7x61 Sharp & Hart, the predecessor to the 7mm mag..

The belted 7mm, as previously stated, a pronounced shove, really a lot of fun to shoot..
The 300 Wby, which I assume is pretty close in energies to the 300 Win..
I found this to be a very satisfying gun to shoot... I shot it about 3 times and I was satisfied... it has been a safe queen for the last 25 years...

+1 on anything in the 6.5mm; I'm a 260 guy but the Swede is another excellent option that provides good long-range ballistics and works very well for hunting, with minimal recoil.

260s rock too, I chose the 6.5x55 because they all come with a super tight twist, where as most 260s are only 1:9 which won't stabalize the long BT 140s or the hefty 160s. I love me Tikka SS it is my baby, my grandfathers original sweed mauser is awsome too. Now that Tikka is making a 1:8 twist 260 I might have to get one of those too. 6.5mms are the perfect mix, you can push them to high speeds with virtualy no recoil and the high BC and SD of those bullets makes them very deadly on nearly anything at any realistic range.

I have an SX-AR in .308 and is a real pussycat in regards to recoil. It is extremely accurate if the barrel is not allowed to foul too badley. Cabela's had it on sale last year for $899 and I hade a good trade and gift cards, so I said what the heck. I would not have purchased for $1200. Great rifle though. Breaking down to give it a good cleaning will be a challenge.

Yes the .300 mags all have a decent kick to them..Not sure I would want to shoot a .300 mag with a bum shoulder , but then again I wouldn't want to shoot a 7mm mag with a bum shoulder either.Tough question to answer..Depends on your threshold when it comes to pain..

Now if she is around then I would bare with the pain and go home with a new gal... :p

My .280 is a pleasure to shoot, is accurate, does not need a lot of powder, shoots 139-140 gr bullets. It carries nice with any kind of sling. It's a Mauser commercial action, Douglas heavy sporter 26 inch barrel, timney trigger, custom stock. Life is good! Good luck! Bob

To be blunt, if you have shoulder damage or other non-mental recoil issues, I don't see why you would even consider a .30 magnum or anything in its class. Get a .270, .280, .25-06, .260, etc.
